Abstract

A magnetic storage medium is formed of magnetic nanoparticles that are encapsulated within nanotubes (e.g., carbon nanotubes).

Claims (12)

1. A magnetic storage media, comprising:

a nanotube;

a first magnetic nanoparticle configured to store binary information through magnetic polarization, said first magnetic nanoparticle contained within said nanotube;

a second magnetic nanoparticle configured to store binary information through magnetic polarization, said second magnetic nanoparticle contained within said nanotube; and

a first magnetic shunt nanoparticle, said first magnetic shunt nanoparticle contained within said nanotube between said first and second magnetic nanoparticles, wherein said magnetic shunt nanoparticle is configured to duct magnetic flux without permanently retaining a magnetic field.

2. The magnetic storage media of claim 1 , wherein said first magnetic shunt nanoparticle is comprised of a dielectric material.

3. The magnetic storage media of claim 1 , wherein said nanotube is encapsulated within a data layer.

4. The magnetic storage media of claim 1 , wherein said first magnetic shunt nanoparticle is comprised of an insulating material.

5. The magnetic storage media of claim 1 , wherein said first and second magnetic nanoparticles and said first magnetic shunt nanoparticle are held in a stationary position within said nanotube by friction.

6. The magnetic storage media of claim 1 , wherein said nanotube is a carbon nanotube.

7. The magnetic storage media of claim 1 , further comprising a third magnetic nanoparticle configured to store binary information through magnetic polarization, said third magnetic nanoparticle contained within said nanotube; and

a second magnetic shunt nanoparticle, said second magnetic shunt nanoparticle contained within said nanotube between said second and third magnetic nanoparticles.
