Abstract

The present invention relates to a compact optic lens for a high intensity light source having improved output beam characteristics. The compact optic lens provides increased light output without increasing device cost or device size to enable coverage of many beam angles.

Claims (12)

1. A compact optic lens for a light source comprising a molded transparent body comprising a light receiving region, a light reflecting region, a light blending region, and a light output region;

wherein the light receiving region comprises a first geometric structure within the transparent body that is configured to receive input light from the high intensity light source within a plurality of first two-dimensional planes, and is configured to provide a first output light within the plurality of first two-dimensional planes within the transparent body to a light reflecting region, wherein the first geometric structure is substantially flat;

wherein the light reflecting region comprises a surface on the transparent body that is configured to receive the first output light from the light receiving region, and is configured to provide a second output light within the plurality of first two-dimensional planes within the transparent body to the light blending region;

wherein the light blending region comprises a plurality of prism structures formed on the transparent body that is configured to receive the second output light from the light reflecting region, wherein the plurality of prism structures is configured to optically deflect the second output light to form deflected output light within a plurality of second two-dimensional planes, and wherein the plurality of prism structures is configured to provide the deflected output light as blended light within the transparent body to the light output region;

wherein the plurality of first-two-dimensional planes and the plurality of second two-dimensional planes intersect; and

wherein the light output region comprises a surface on the transparent body that is configured to receive the blended light and output the blended light.

2. The compact optic lens of claim 1 , wherein the molded transparent body comprises a reflecting lens for an MR 16 light source.

3. The compact optic lens of claim 1 , wherein the transparent body comprises polycarbonate.

4. The compact optic lens of claim 1 , wherein a number of prism structures in the plurality of prism structures is within a range of approximately 90 to approximately 180.

5. The compact optic lens of claim 1 , wherein an internal angle of a prism structure of the plurality of prism structures is within a range of approximately 89 degrees to approximately 91 degrees.

6. The compact optic lens of claim 1 , wherein an outside perimeter of the transparent body comprises a substantially flat portion.

7. The compact optic lens of claim 1 , wherein a first light ray deflected from a first prism structure, and a second light ray deflected from a second prism structure intersect at the surface of the transparent body.
