Abstract

An intravascular electrode system includes an expandable anchor and a flexible substrate which carries at least one electrode. The anchor is positioned in a blood vessel and expanded to an expanded position to bias the electrode in contact with the vessel wall. The flexible substrate may be longitudinally withdrawn from its position between the anchor and the vessel wall without removing the anchor from the blood vessel. A second flexible substrate may be longitudinally inserted into position between the anchor and vessel wall as replacement for the first substrate.

Claims (13)

1. An intravascular electrode system, comprising:

a substrate formed of flexible material, the substrate having a first, convex, face positionable in contact with a vessel wall and a second face, at least one electrode positioned on the first face;

an anchor having a radially compressed position and a radially expanded position, the anchor expandable to the radially expanded position to bias the first face and the at least one electrode into contact with the vessel wall, the substrate configured to be longitudinally slidable relative to the anchor when the anchor is in an expanded state in a blood vessel, to allow separation of the substrate from the anchor without moving the anchor to the radially compressed position within the blood vessel.

The electrode system of claim 1 , wherein the flexible substrate is formed of an insulative material, the electrode positioned such that when the at least one electrode is positioned in contact with a blood vessel the insulative material electrically isolates the electrode from a surrounding blood pool.

3. The electrode system of claim 1 , wherein the insulative material is silicone.

4. The electrode system of claim 1 , wherein the anchor includes a longitudinally positioned receiver section, the flexible substrate slidably positionable within the receiver section.

5. A method of using an intravascular electrode system, comprising:

providing a substrate formed of flexible material, the substrate having a first face and a second face, and at least one electrode positioned on the first face;

positioning an anchor within a blood vessel from which electrical therapy is to be delivered to a target structure external to the blood vessel;

expanding the anchor within the blood vessel from a radially compressed position to a radially expanded position; and

retaining the substrate in a therapy position between the anchor and the vessel wall and biasing the first face and electrode against the blood vessel wall using the anchor in the expanded position; and

with the anchor remaining in the expanded position, longitudinally withdrawing the substrate from the therapy position between the vessel wall and anchor.

6. The method of claim 5 , including providing a second substrate having at least one electrode thereon and, with the anchor in the expanded position within the blood vessel, longitudinally advancing the second substrate into the therapy position between the vessel wall and anchor.
