Abstract

A cord drive mechanism to convert linear motion to circular motion for use in coverings for architectural openings. Various controls are used to provide a braking force on the cord. Some of the embodiments incorporate a capstan.

Claims (13)

1. A covering for an architectural opening, comprising:

an extendable material ( 112 ) movable from a lowered position to a raised position for covering and uncovering the opening;

a drive spool ( 124 ) mounted for rotation and operatively connected to said extendable material ( 112 ) for raising and lowering said extendable material, wherein said drive spool ( 124 ) rotates in a first direction to raise said extendable material and in a second direction to lower said extendable material;

a drive cord ( 122 ) having first and second ends, said first end of said drive cord being wrapped onto said drive spool ( 124 ); and

first and second brakes ( 104 ″), ( 284 ) operatively connected in series to said drive cord ( 122 ), with said drive cord ( 122 ) extending from said drive spool ( 124 ) to said first brake ( 104 ), and then to said second brake ( 284 ), wherein said first brake ( 104 ) includes a roller ( 132 ) mounted for selective rotation, and said drive cord ( 122 ) is wrapped around said roller ( 132 ), wherein braking engagement of said second brake ( 284 ) with said drive cord ( 122 ) tightens the drive cord ( 122 ) around the roller ( 132 ) of the first brake ( 104 ), and wherein pulling on the second end ( 320 ) of said drive cord ( 122 ) unwinds the drive cord ( 122 ) from the drive spool ( 124 ) and raises the extendable material ( 112 ).

2. A covering for an architectural opening as recited in claim 1 , wherein said second brake ( 284 ) ( 254 ) ( 104 **″) is selected from the group consisting of roller brakes ( 104 **″), in which the drive cord ( 122 ) wraps around a roller ( 132 ), brakes with a pivoting locking dog ( 254 ) which pinches the drive cord ( 122 ), and wand handle brakes ( 284 ) which include an elongated wand body ( 296 ) and a handle ( 286 ) mounted on the wand body ( 296 ) and movable relative to the wand body ( 296 ), wherein the drive cord ( 122 ) is fixed relative to the handle ( 286 ).

3. A covering for an architectural opening as recited in claim 1 , and further comprising a lift spool ( 116 ) ( 863 ); and

a lift cord ( 114 ) ( 868 ) having a first end secured to said lift spool ( 116 ) ( 863 ) and a second end secured to said extendable material ( 112 );

wherein said drive spool ( 124 ) is operatively connected to said extendable material ( 112 ) through said lift spool ( 116 ) ( 863 ) and lift cord ( 114 ), and wherein said lift cord ( 114 ) is separate from said drive cord ( 122 ).

4. A covering for an architectural opening as recited in claim 3 , wherein said second brake ( 284 ) ( 254 ) ( 104 **″) is selected from the group consisting of roller brakes ( 104 **″), in which the drive cord ( 122 ) wraps around a roller ( 132 ), brakes with a pivoting locking dog ( 254 ) which pinches the drive cord ( 122 ), and wand handle brakes ( 284 ) which include an elongated wand body ( 296 ) and a handle ( 286 ) mounted on the wand body ( 296 ) and movable relative to the wand body ( 296 ), wherein the drive cord ( 122 ) is fixed relative to the handle ( 286 ).

5. A covering for an architectural opening as recited in claim 1 , and further comprising a tassel weight secured to the second end of said drive cord.

6. A covering for an architectural opening as recited in claim 3 , and further comprising a tassel weight secured to the second end of said drive cord.

7. A covering for an architectural opening as recited in claim 6 , wherein said second brake is selected from the group consisting of roller brakes, in which the drive cord wraps around a roller, and brakes with a pivoting locking dog which pinches the drive cord.
