Abstract

The present invention provides novel biolatex conjugate compositions and methods of production and use thereof. The novel biolatex conjugate compositions comprise a biopolymer-additive complex (prepared by co-extruding a biopolymer feedstock, at least one performance-enhancing additive, and at least one plasticizer under shear forces) reacted with a crosslinking agent under shear forces. The biolatex conjugate compositions exhibit enhanced performance properties for coated paper, paperboard, and other applications using extremely low levels of performance-enhancing additives.

Claims (20)

. A coating composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of particles, the particles comprising colloid forming particles wherein the colloid forming particles are present alone and in complexes, the complexes comprising one of the colloid forming particles and a titanium dioxide particle.

. The coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the titanium dioxide particle has an average particle size of less than about 1.0 micron.

. The coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the titanium dioxide particle has an average particle size of less than about 0.5 micron.

. The coating composition of claim 1 , wherein titanium dioxide is present in the composition at a weight percentage from about 0.1% to about 5% by weight based on weight of the particles.

. The coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the titanium dioxide is present in the composition at a weight percentage of less than about 1% by weight based on weight of the composition.

. The coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the titanium dioxide is anatase titanium dioxide.

. The coating composition of claim 1 , further including an optical brightening agent.

. The coating composition of claim 7 , wherein the optical brightening agent is a stilbene.

. The coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the colloid forming particles comprise a biopolymer.

. The coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the colloid forming particles have an average particle size of less than about 400 nanometers.

. The coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the colloid forming particles have an average particle size of less than about 100 nanometers.

. The coating composition of claim 9 , wherein the biopolymer is selected from the group consisting of carbohydrates, starches and proteins.

. The coating composition of any of claim 1 , wherein the particles of the coating composition are prepared by co-extruding a biopolymer feedstock, a plasticizer, and titanium dioxide under shear forces.

. A method for manufacturing a coated paper product, the method comprising applying a coating formulation to at least one surface of a paper substrate, wherein the coating formulation comprises an aqueous dispersion of particles, the particles comprising complex particles comprising colloid forming particles and particles of at least one additive.

. The method of claim 14 , wherein the at least one additive is selected from the group consisting of dyes, pigments, titanium dioxide, aluminum oxide, aluminum trihydrate, sodium aluminum phosphate, aluminum phosphate, sodium aluminum magnesium silicate, fly ash, zeolite, sodium aluminum silicate, talc, clay, delaminated clay, calcined kaolin clay, montmorillonite clay, nanoclay, silica particles, zinc oxide, calcium carbonate, optical brightening agents, biocides, stabilizers, and combinations thereof.

. The method of claim 14 , wherein the substrate is selected from the group consisting of paper and paperboard.

. The method of claim 14 , wherein the colloid forming particles are particles of a biopolymer.

. The method of claim 17 , wherein the biopolymer is selected from the group consisting of a carbohydrate, a starch and a protein.

. The method of claim 14 , wherein the colloid forming particles have an average particle size of less than about 400 nanometers.
