Abstract

A technique for sensing involving one or more individual sensing tiles that are physically connected to a frame with electrical and communications wiring integrated into the frame and with corresponding physical, electrical and communication connectors on the tiles and the frame.

Claims (14)

1. A composite sensor comprising:

a frame, a plurality of sensor tiles physically distinct, separate and apart from each other and the frame that snap into the frame with tile connectors which provide power, data and control connection between the tiles and the frame, the tile connectors physically distinct, separate and apart from the tiles and the frame, the frame having frame connectors providing power, data and control connections with the tiles and corresponding wiring between tiles within the frame, and frame edges physically distinct, separate and apart from the frame connectors which also connect the frame edges, the frame and the sensor tiles and the frame connectors and the tile connectors align in a horizontal plane, the tiles conform in shape to the frame, that form a sensor surface.

2. A composite sensor of claim 1 wherein connective wiring and a computer in communication with the connective wiring which causes prompting signals corresponding to the sensor to be sent to the connective wiring which produces from the signal a resultant time varying continuous signal.

3. The composite sensor of claim 2 wherein the connective wiring is integrated into the frame.

4. The composite sensor of claim 3 wherein the sensor tiles are pressure or force sensors.

5. A composite sensor of claim 4 wherein the sensor surface detects force applied to the surface and provides a signal corresponding to the force.

6. A composite sensor of claim 5 wherein the resulting signal is geometrically continuous and seamless image of applied forces and pressures along the surface.

7. A method for sensing with a composite sensor comprising the steps of:

detecting force applied to a sensor surface formed by a plurality of sensor tiles physically distinct, separate and apart from each other and the frame that snap into the frame with tile connectors which provide power, data and control connection between the tiles and the frame, the tile connectors physically distinct, separate and apart from the tiles and the frame, the frame having frame connectors providing power, data and control connections with the tiles and corresponding wiring between tiles within the frame, and frame edges physically distinct, separate and apart from the frame connectors which also connect the frame edges, the frame and the sensor tiles and the frame connectors and the tile connectors align in a horizontal plane, the tiles conform in shape to a frame in which the tiles are disposed, where the surface is contiguous, and detected force can be sensed in a manner that is geometrically continuous and seamless on a surface;

providing a signal corresponding to the force to a computer through connective wiring in the frame; and

producing with the computer from the signal a time varying continuous image of force applied to the surface.

8. The composite sensor of claim 1 wherein the frame comprises a plurality of distinct, separate and apart frame edges which connect together to form the frame, one of the plurality of tiles attached to one of the frame edges.

9. The composite sensor of claim 8 including mechanical frame connectors which provide mechanical connection between the tiles in the frame edges.

10. The composite sensor of claim 9 wherein one of the plurality of tiles is a master tile which provides communication between all the tiles and a computer.
