Abstract

Various embodiments of the present invention are directed to methods and systems for transmitting optical signals from a source to a plurality of receiving devices. In one method embodiment, an optical enablement signal is transmitted from the source to the plurality of receiving devices. The target receiving device responds to receiving the optical enablement signal by preparing to receive one or more optical data signals. The source transmits the one or more optical data signals to the target receiving device. The remaining receiving devices do not receive the one or more optical data signals.

Claims (31)

1. An optical bus system, comprising:

a first waveguide having a first end and a second end, wherein the first end is to optically receive an optical signal output by a source on the first waveguide;

a second waveguide to transmit an optical enablement signal targeting a given one of a plurality of receiving devices;

a resonator optically coupled to the first waveguide and to be electronically coupled to the given receiving device, the optical enablement signal to cause the given receiving device to apply a voltage to the resonator to cause the resonator to evanescently couple at least a portion of the optical signal from the first waveguide into the resonator; and

an optoelectronic converter optically coupled to the resonator and to be electronically coupled to the given receiving device, wherein the optoelectronic converter is to convert the optical signal resonating in the resonator into an electrical signal that is transmitted to the given receiving device.

2. The optical bus system of claim 1 , wherein the optical signal comprises

an optical data signal.

3. An optical bus system, comprising:

a first waveguide having a first end and a second end, wherein the first end is to optically receive an optical signal output by a source on the first waveguide;

a resonator optically coupled to the first waveguide and to be electronically coupled to a receiving device, wherein when the receiving device applies a voltage to the resonator, the resonator is to evanescently couple at least a portion of the optical signal from the first waveguide into the resonator;

an optoelectronic converter optically coupled to the resonator and to be electronically coupled to the receiving device, wherein the optoelectronic converter is to convert the optical signal resonating in the resonator into an electrical signal that is transmitted to the receiving device;

a second waveguide having a first end and a second end, wherein the first end of the second waveguide is to optically receive an optical enablement signal output by the source on the second waveguide;

a diverter optically coupled to the second waveguide, the diverter to divert a portion of the optical enablement signal from the second waveguide; and

an optoelectronic converter electronically coupled to the receiving device and positioned to receive the diverted portion of the optical enablement signal and convert the diverted portion of the optical enablement signal into an electrical signal to cause the receiving device to apply the voltage to the resonator.

4. The optical bus system of claim 3 , wherein the diverter comprises one of:

a partially reflective mirror; and

a microring resonator.

5. The optical bus system of claim 1 , wherein the resonator comprises one of:

a microring resonator; and

a photonic crystal resonant cavity.

6. The optical bus system of claim 1 , wherein the second waveguide is to transmit the optical enablement signal during a first phase, and to transmit an optical data signal during a second phase.

7. The optical bus system of claim 1 , wherein the optical enablement signal is transmitted in the second waveguide by the source.

8. The optical bus system of claim 1 , further comprising an optical diverter to divert a portion of the optical enablement signal from the second waveguide to the given receiving device.

9. The optical bus system of claim 8 , wherein the diverter includes a mirror.

10. The optical bus system of claim 8 , wherein the diverter includes a resonator.

11. The optical bus system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a third waveguide to transmit an optical clock signal to the plurality of receiving devices.

12. An optical bus system comprising:

a waveguide having a first end and a second end, wherein the first end is to receive an optical enablement signal during a first phase and an optical data signal during a second phase;

a resonator optically coupled to the waveguide and to be electronically coupled to a receiving device, the optical enablement signal to cause the receiving device to apply a voltage to the resonator to cause the resonator to evanescently couple at least a portion of the optical data signal from the waveguide into the resonator; and

an optoelectronic converter optically coupled to the resonator and to be electronically coupled to the receiving device, wherein the optoelectronic converter is to convert the optical data signal resonating in the resonator into an electrical signal that is transmitted to the receiving device.
