Abstract

Apparatus, methods, media and code for applying a mailing label are provided. The apparatus may include a mail receipt conveyor; a mail registration station that is configured to receive from the mail receipt conveyor a mail item that includes on an exterior surface of an envelope a printed message indicating that a customer name appearing on the mail item does not correspond to an address on the mail item; an imaging device that is configured to capture a delivery error segment of the surface; a processor device that is configured to identify an electronic mail address that corresponds to a customer name in the addressee segment of the surface; and a transmitter device that is configured to transmit to the email address an electronic form for electronically receiving a different address.

Claims (73)

1. Apparatus for applying a mailing label, the apparatus comprising:

a mail receipt conveyor;

a mail registration station that is configured to receive from the mail receipt conveyor a mail item that includes on an exterior surface of an envelope a printed message indicating that a customer name appearing on the mail item does not correspond to an address on the mail item;

an imaging device that is configured to capture a delivery error segment of the surface;

a processor device that is configured to identify an electronic mail address that corresponds to a customer name in the addressee segment of the surface;

a transmitter device that is configured to transmit to the email address an electronic form for electronically receiving a different address;

the processor device being further configured to:

route the envelope from a mail item digitization process to a holding bin;

at the termination of a wait period during which the different address is not received:

route the envelope back to the mail item digitization process; and

route an electronic image of a part of the mail item to a destination corresponding to the part; and

flag the electronic image as exceptional based on the printed message.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a receiver device that is configured to receive the different address;

wherein the processor device is further configured to:

apply to the envelope a mailing label including the different address; and

route the envelope from the holding bin to a mail delivery service.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the processor is further configured to:

apply an electronic classification network to an input vector that includes:

a physical parameter vector based on output from an optical probe of the envelope;

a string vector that includes a text string vector from the first mail item part; and

receive from the network an output vector indicating a match with the destination.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the processor is further configured to:

apply an electronic classification network to an input vector that includes:

a physical parameter vector based on output from an optical probe of the envelope;

a vector that includes a probability of a match between a text string vector from the mail item part and a library corresponding to the destination; and

receive from the network an output vector indicating a match with the destination.

An article of manufacture comprising a non-transitory computer usable medium having computer readable program code embodied therein, the code when executed by one or more processors of a computer system causing a labeler to apply a mailing label, the computer readable program code in the article comprising:

computer readable program code that when executed causes the computer to register a mail item that includes on an exterior surface of an envelope a printed message indicating that a customer name appearing on the mail item does not correspond to an address on the mail item;

computer readable program code that when executed causes the computer to capture a delivery error segment of the surface;

computer readable program code that when executed causes the computer to identify an electronic mail address that corresponds to a customer name in the addressee segment of the surface;

computer readable program code that when executed causes the computer to transmit to the email address an electronic form for electronically receiving a different address;

computer readable program code that when executed causes the computer to route the envelope from a mail item digitization process to a holding bin;

computer readable program code that when executed causes the computer to route, at the termination of a wait period during which the different address is not received, the envelope back to the mail item digitization process;

computer readable prom code that when executed causes the computer to route an electronic image of a part of the mail item to a destination corresponding to the part;

computer readable program code that when executed causes the computer to apply at electronic classification network to an input vector that includes:

a physical parameter vector based on output from an optical probe of the envelope; and

a vector that includes a probability of a match between a text string vector from the mail item part and a library corresponding to the destination; and

computer readable program code that when executed causes the computer to receive from the network an output vector indicating a match with the destination.

6. The article of claim 5 further comprising:

computer readable program code that when executed causes the computer to receive the different address;

computer readable program code that when executed causes a labeler to apply to the envelope a mailing label including the different address; and

computer readable program code that when executed causes the computer to routing the envelope from the holding bin to a mail delivery service.

7. The article of claim 5 further comprising:

computer readable program code that when executed causes the computer to apply an electronic classification network to an input vector that includes:

a physical parameter vector based on output from an optical probe of the envelope;

a string vector that includes a text string vector from the first mail item part; and

computer readable program code that when executed causes the computer to receive from the network an output vector indicating a match with the destination.

8. The method of claim 5 wherein the routing comprises flagging the electronic image as exceptional based on the printed message.

9. One or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing computer-executable instructions which, when executed by one or more processors of a computer system, perform a method for applying a mailing label, the method comprising:

registering, by the one or more processors, a mail item received from a mail delivery service, the mail item including on an exterior surface of an envelope a printed message indicating that a customer name appearing on the mail item does not correspond to an address on the mail item;

capturing, by an imaging device, a delivery error segment of the surface;

identifying, by the one or more processors, an electronic mail address that corresponds to a customer name in the addressee segment of the surface;

transmitting, by a transmitter, to the email address an electronic form for electronically receiving a different address;

routing the envelope, by the one or more processors, from a mail item digitization process to a holding bin;

at the termination of a wait period during which the different address is not received:

routing, by the one or more processors, the envelope back to the mail item digitization process; and

routing, by the one or more processors, an electronic image of a part of the mail item to a destination corresponding to the part;

wherein:

the routing further comprises flagging, by the one or more processors, the electronic image as exceptional based on the printed message.

10. The media of claim 9 wherein the method further comprises:

receiving, by the one or more processors, the different address;

applying, by the labeler, to the envelope a mailing label including the different address; and

routing, by the one or more processors, the envelope from the holding bin to a mail delivery service.

11. The media of claim 9 wherein in the method the routing comprises:

applying, by the one or more processors, an electronic classification network to an input vector that includes:

a physical parameter vector based on output from an optical probe of the envelope;

a string vector that includes a text string vector from the first mail item part; and

receiving, by the one or more processors, from the network an output vector indicating a match with the destination.

12. The media of claim 9 wherein the method the routing comprises:

applying, by the one or more processors, an electronic classification network to an input vector that includes:

a physical parameter vector based on output from an optical probe of the envelope;

a vector that includes a probability of a match between a text string vector from the mail item part and a library corresponding to the destination; and

receiving, by the one or more processors, from the network an output vector indicating a match with the destination.
