Active tuning system for engine control unit
A method for an engine control unit to update internal tables based on feedback from the engine without external computing, comprising the steps of establishing flash memory and RAM memory in the ECU, assigning a portion of the RAM memory to storage of a table of engine conditions from the flash memory, updating all program code pointers to the table to read the table from the assigned portion of RAM, and revise the table in RAM based on input received from the engine sensors.
1. A method for an engine control unit to update internal tables based on feedback from an engine without external computing, comprising the steps of:
providing flash memory and RAM memory in the engine control unit;
copying fuel adjustment values from the flash memory to the RAM memory;
modifying the fuel adjustment values copied to the RAM memory based on feedback from sensors while the engine control unit is running;
reassigning the engine control unit to stop reading fuel adjustment value from the flash memory and begin reading fuel adjustment values from the RAM memory; and
adjusting a fuel to air mixture in the engine based on the fuel adjustment values from the RAM memory.
2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
copying engine timing values from the flash memory to the RAM memory;
modifying the engine timing values copied to the RAM memory based on feedback from knock sensors while the engine control unit is running;
reassigning the engine control unit to stop reading engine timing values from the flash memory and begin reading engine timing values from the RAM memory; and
adjusting a spark plug ignition timing in the engine based on the engine timing values from the RAM memory.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein at engine start-up, the engine control unit copies fuel adjustment values from flash memory to RAM memory after a disconnection from a power supply, and saves previous fuel adjustment values in the RAM memory until the engine control unit is disconnected from a power supply.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein a lambda sensor delay is determined to account for a delay between a lambda sensor reading and a change in engine conditions.
