Abstract

A Spontaneous Area Network (SPAN) is formed by mobile and fixed nodes using wireless transmission links between nodes, usually in a nearby geographical area. Applications allow users to create, join, leave, and manage SPANs and groups in a SPAN. Automatic procedures allow nodes to join other SPANs. Transmission power of the wireless network interface is dynamic, varying depending on battery level, type of information to transmit, state and topology of the network. A delay tolerant object layer abstraction creates, modifies, deletes, publishes, and handles Delay Tolerant Distributed Objects (DTDOs). A Patient Transport Protocol (PTP) ensures a reliable transport of information through the network while avoiding congestion conditions. An aggressive and explosive network protocol (AGENET) has routing and forwarding capacities and uses datagrams to establish communication between different nodes of the SPAN. Cooperation and diversity are exploited to react to node mobility that causes frequent changes in network topology and disconnections.

Claims (44)

1. A system comprising:

a plurality of nodes that change geographical location over time;

a plurality of transmission links in a nearby geographical area that connect the plurality of nodes, wherein a set of the plurality of nodes communicating over said transmission links form a network and a subset of the set of the plurality of nodes form a group within the network;

one or more applications that allow nodes to create, join and leave the network, to create, join and leave the group within the network, and to discover and communicate with other nodes within the set of the plurality of nodes; and

wherein the nodes are configured to create, store and forward delay tolerant distributed information, wherein communication in disconnected scenarios is supported to permit transfer of the delay tolerant distributed information from a first node to a second node without a transmission path between the first node and the second node.

2. The system of claim 1 :

wherein said applications comprise procedures to allow nodes to join the network and the group within the network without user intervention.

3. The system of claim 1 further comprising:

a transport protocol that ensures reliable transport of information through the set of the plurality of nodes while avoiding congestion.

4. The system of claim 1 further comprising:

a network protocol that routes and forwards datagrams to establish communication between the plurality of nodes and exploits cooperation and diversity to react to node mobility

wherein one or more node in the set of the plurality of nodes changes location causing changes in network topology.

5. The system of claim 1 further comprising:

a plurality of fixed nodes that remain in a stationary location;

wherein the plurality of transmission links connect the plurality of nodes and the plurality of fixed nodes.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the plurality of nodes comprise devices belonging to a wireless network of sensors or actuators.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein said delay tolerant distributed information comprises data files, user identities, or directories.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein said delay tolerant distributed information is associated with a time to life (TTL) value.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein said delay tolerant distributed information comprises a Delay Tolerant Distributed Object (DTDO) controlled through a Delay Tolerant Layer Abstraction (DELTOYA).

10. A system comprising:

a plurality of nodes that change geographical location over time;

a plurality of transmission links in a nearby geographical area that connect the plurality of nodes, wherein a set of the plurality of nodes communicating over said transmission links form a network and a subset of the set of the plurality of nodes form a group within the network;

one or more applications that allow nodes to create, join and leave the network, to create, join and leave the group within the network, and to discover and communicate with other nodes within the set of the plurality of nodes;

a transport protocol that ensures reliable transport of information through the set of the plurality of nodes while avoiding congestion; and

a network protocol that routes and forwards datagrams to establish communication between the plurality of nodes and exploits cooperation and diversity to react to node mobility;

wherein one or more node in the set of the plurality of nodes changes location causing changes in network topology; and

wherein the nodes are configured to create, store and forward delay tolerant distributed information, wherein communication in disconnected scenarios is supported to permit transfer of the delay tolerant distributed information from a first node to a second node without a transmission path between the first node and the second node.

14. The system of claim 10 wherein said delay tolerant distributed information comprises a Delay Tolerant Distributed Object (DTDO) controlled through a Delay Tolerant Layer Abstraction (DELTOYA).

15. A system comprising:

a first plurality of nodes that change geographical location over time;

a second plurality of nodes that remain in a stationary location;

a plurality of transmission links in a nearby geographical area that connect the first plurality of nodes and the second plurality of nodes, wherein a set of the first plurality of nodes and the second plurality of nodes communicating over said transmission links form a network and a subset of the set of the first plurality of nodes and the second plurality of nodes form a group within the network;
