Abstract

A color display fan deck which illustrates paint colors and a method for making the color display fan deck is described. The color display fan deck includes paper blades which has paint applied on each sized paper surface of each side of the blade. A plurality of planar swatch bearing blades is pivotally joined together at one end to form a deck or fan deck of paper blades painted on each side. The method includes sizing and painting a paper web on both sides with a water based paint having selected heat resistant pigments.

Claims (33)

1. A method of making a color fan deck, the method comprising:

gravure printing sizing onto oppositely facing surfaces of a paper web to provide a first sized coat on the oppositely facing surfaces of the paper web;

gravure printing sizing on the first sized coat on the oppositely facing surfaces of the paper web to provide double sized coated surfaces of the paper web;

drying the sizing on the double sized coated surfaces of the paper web to provide dried double sized surfaces of the paper web;

applying a water based paint having a pigment that does not include heavy metals to a first surface of the paper web with the dried double sized coated surface to provide a first painted surface of the paper web;

drying the first painted surface of the paper web by conveying it through an oven with a moving belt to provide a paper web having a dried painted first surface;

applying a water based paint having a pigment that does not include heavy metals to a second surface of the paper web with the dried double sized coated surface to provide a second painted surface of the paper web, the second surface facing opposite the first surface; and

drying the second painted surface of the paper web by conveying it through an oven with a moving belt to provide a paper web having dried painted first and second surfaces.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the moving belt is coated with a fluoropolymer having a coefficient of friction in the range of about 0.05 to about 0.2.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the water based paint is an emulsion which includes an acrylic binder which will provide a painted surface which when dried will not stick to an opposite painted surface having paint including the same acrylic binder.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the paper is has a basis weight of from about 120 to about 145 pounds and has a thickness of from about 8 to about 10 mils.

5. The method of claim 2 wherein the water based paint is an emulsion which includes an acrylic binder which will provide a painted surface which when dried will not stick to an opposite painted surface having paint including the same acrylic binder.

6. The method of claim 4 wherein the moving belt is coated with a fluoropolymer having a coefficient of friction in the range of about 0.05 to about 0.2 and the water based paint is an emulsion which includes an acrylic binder which will provide a painted surface which when dried will not stick to an opposite painted surface having paint including the same acrylic binder.

7. A method of making a color fan deck, the method comprising:

gravure printing sizing onto oppositely facing surfaces of a paper web to provide a first sized coat on the oppositely facing surfaces of the paper web, the paper web having a basis weight of from about 80 to about 160 pounds and a thickness of from about 6 to about 12 mils;

gravure printing sizing on the first sized coat on the oppositely facing surfaces of the paper web to provide double sized coated surfaces of the paper web;

drying the sizing on the double sized coated surfaces of the paper web to provide dried double sized surfaces of the paper web;

applying a water based paint having a pigment that does not include heavy metals to a first surface of the paper web with the dried double sized coated surface to provide a first painted surface of the paper web, the water based paint including an acrylic binder which will provide a painted surface which when dried will not stick to an opposite painted surface having paint including the same acrylic binder, the water base paint including at least one pigment which will not discolor when exposed to a temperature of at least about 200° F. for 10 minutes;

drying the first painted surface of the paper web by conveying it through an oven with a moving belt to provide a paper web having a dried painted first surface;

applying a water based paint which does not include heavy metals to a second surface of the paper web with the dried double sized coated surface to provide a second painted surface of the paper web, the second surface facing opposite the first surface; and

drying the second painted surface of the paper web by conveying it through an oven with a moving belt coated with a fluoropolymer having a coefficient of friction in the range of about 0.05 to about 0.2, the moving fluoropolymer-coated belt conveying the paper web with the second paint coated surface through an oven having a temperature of from about 185° F. to about 220° F. to provide a paper web having dried painted first and second surfaces wherein after drying the first and second surfaces the paint color will not change color in a way which is discernable to a normal human eye under the same illuminant.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the method further comprises cutting the paper web having the dried painted first and second surfaces to provide elongated fan blades.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the method further includes fastening the elongated fan blades at one end for pivotal rotation of the fan blades around a fastener.

10. A method of making a color fan deck, the method comprising:

gravure printing sizing onto a first surface of a paper web to provide a first sized coat on the first surface of the paper web;

gravure printing sizing on the first sized coat on the first side surface of the paper web to provide a double sized coated first surface of the paper web;

drying the sizing on the double sized coated first surface of the paper web to provide a dried double sized coated first surface of the paper web;

applying a water based paint having a pigment that does not include heavy metals to the dried double sized coated first surface of the paper web to provide a first painted surface of the paper web;

drying the first painted surface of the paper web by conveying it through an oven with a moving belt to provide a paper web having a dried painted first surface;

gravure printing sizing onto a second surface of the paper web having the dried painted first surface, the second surface oppositely facing the first surface of the paper web, to provide a first sized coat on the second surface of the paper web;

gravure printing sizing on the first sized coat on the second surface of the paper web with the dried painted first surface to provide a double sized coated second surface of the paper web;

drying the sizing on the double sized coated second surface of the paper web; applying a water based paint having a pigment that does not include heavy metals to the dried double sized coated second surface of the paper web to provide a second painted surface of the paper web; and

drying the second painted surface of the paper web by conveying it through an oven with a moving belt to provide a paper web having dried painted first and second surfaces.
