Provision of targeted content
Measures, including methods, apparatus and computer program products, are provided for establishing a common identity for a user of a client computer in a network comprising a first domain and a second domain. A method comprises: transmitting a first request from the client computer to the first domain; receiving, at the client computer, a first identity for the user associated with the first domain and a first redirection instruction, wherein the first redirection instruction instructs the client computer to transmit a second request to the second domain; transmitting, from the client computer to the second domain, a second request and information relating to the first identity; and receiving, at the client computer, a second identity for the user associated with the second domain and a second redirection instruction, wherein the second identity is related to the first identity.
1. A method of establishing a common identity for a user of a client computer in a network comprising a first domain and a second domain, the method comprising:
receiving at the first domain a first request from the client computer, the first request comprising a request for content;
ascertaining whether the user of the client computer has an identity associated with the first domain; and
in response to ascertaining that the user does not have an identity associated with the first domain, transmitting, from the first domain to the client computer, a first identity for the user associated with the first domain and a first redirection instruction,
wherein the first redirection instruction instructs the client computer to transmit a second request to the second domain to access a page on the second domain which is used for assigning user identities associated with the second domain,
wherein the first redirection instruction is configured to cause the second domain to transmit to the client computer a second identity for the user associated with the second domain, and
wherein the second identity for the user associated with the second domain is related to the first identity for the user associated with the first domain.
2. The method of claim 1 , comprising:
ascertaining that the user of the client computer has an identity on a third domain; and
relating the identity on the third domain to the user's identity on the first domain.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the ascertaining that the user of the client computer has an identity associated with the first domain is performed by ascertaining whether a cookie containing an identity was received with the first request.
4. A method of establishing an identity for a user of a client computer, the method being performed at a first domain and comprising:
receiving a request at the first domain from the client computer, the request comprising a request for content;
identifying whether the request includes an identity for the user associated with the first domain;
in response to identifying that the request does include an identity for the user associated with the first domain:
determining that the user has an identity associated with a second domain of the network; and
recording a relationship between the user's identities associated with the first and second domains; and
in response to identifying that the request does not include an identity for the user associated with the first domain:
determining that the user has an identity associated with a second domain of the network; and
transmitting, to the client computer, an identity for the user associated with the first domain, wherein the identity for the user associated with the first domain is related to the identity for the user associated with the second domain.
5. The method of claim 4 , wherein one or more of the identities for the user associated with the first domain and the identity for the user associated with the second domain comprise a cookie.
