Abstract

A system and method for a patch-like, self-contained substance infusion device which can be attached to a skin surface via an adhesive contact surface. A push button activation assembly can then be used to remove an interlock, allowing a disk or Belleville spring assembly to apply an essentially even and constant pressure to the contents of a fluid reservoir assembly. This allows the release of one or more spring-loaded patient needles into the skin surface, and establishes a fluid communication path between the patient needles and the pressurized fluid reservoir contents thereby delivering an infusion into the skin. The push button activation assembly further allows the release of one or more improved safety mechanisms after use.

Claims (49)

1. A device for delivering a medicament into the body of a patient by injection into or through the skin of a patient, comprising:

a housing having a bottom surface adapted to contact the skin of a patient, a top surface viewable by the patient during use of the device, and a longitudinal axis;

an injection needle adapted for penetration of tissue;

a reservoir, disposed within said housing, forming a chamber for containing said medicament, said reservoir being in fluid communication with the injection needle at least subsequent to activation, wherein said reservoir comprises a substantially flexible membrane;

only a single disk spring, having a first side, a second side, a central portion, and at least one radial void extending from the central portion of the disk spring, wherein the disk spring has a start position, and an end position; and

a spring covering which extends radially from the central portion and substantially covers the at least one void in the disk spring on at least the first side of the disk spring, wherein the spring covering contacts the flexible membrane.

2. A device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the reservoir further comprises a substantially rigid plate bonded to the flexible membrane.

3. A device as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the spring covering is composed of an elastomeric material.

4. A device as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the spring covering is adapted to match a geometry of the rigid plate, thereby eliminating dead space in the reservoir when the disk spring is in the second position.

5. A device as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the rigid plate is composed of a substantially clear material.

6. A device as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the spring cover is composed of an elastomeric material.

7. A device for delivering a medicament into the body of a patient by injection into or through the skin of a patient, comprising:

a housing having a bottom surface adapted to contact the skin of a patient, a top surface viewable by the patient during use of the device, and a longitudinal axis;

an injection needle adapted for penetration of tissue;

a reservoir, disposed within said housing, forming a chamber for containing said medicament, said reservoir being in fluid communication with the injection needle at least subsequent to activation, wherein the reservoir is comprised of a substantially rigid plate and a substantially flexible membrane bonded thereto, and the spring covering contacts the flexible membrane;

only a single disk spring, having a first side, a second side, a central portion, and at least one radial void extending from the central portion of the disk spring, wherein the disk spring has a start position, and an end position; and

a spring covering which extends radially from the central portion and substantially covers the at least one void in the disk spring on at least the first side of the disk spring;

wherein the rigid plate is composed of a substantially clear material;

wherein the spring cover is composed of an elastomeric material; and

wherein the device further comprises at least one indicating protrusion, wherein when the disk spring is in the start position, the indicating protrusion contacts the flexible membrane and forms an impression in the flexible membrane, which is visible through the rigid plate, and when the disk spring is in the end position, the impression formed by the indicating protrusion is compressed by the rigid plate and is not visible through the rigid plate.

8. A device for delivering a medicament into the body of a patient by injection into or through the skin of a patient, comprising:

a housing having a bottom surface adapted to contact the skin of a patient, and a top surface;

an injection needle adapted for penetration of tissue;

a reservoir disposed within said housing, said reservoir comprising of a top member composed of a substantially clear material, and a substantially flexible membrane bonded thereto, forming a chamber for containing said medicament, said reservoir in fluid communication with the injection needle;

a pressure generating system comprising a resilient spring covering, and a resilient element consisting of a single disk spring, wherein the pressure generating system has a start position and an end position, the spring covering contacting the reservoir; and

at least one indicating protrusion, wherein when the pressure generating system is in the start position, the indicating protrusion contacts the flexible membrane and forms an impression in the flexible membrane which is visible through the top member, and when the pressure generating member is in the end position, the impression is not visible.

9. A device as claimed in claim 8 wherein the impression formed by the indicating protrusion is compressed by the top member and is not visible through the top member, thereby indicating the pressure generating system is at the end position.

10. A device as claimed in claim 8 , wherein:

a central portion of the disk spring is open;

the spring covering covers a first side of the disk spring and the open central portion; and

the spring covering conforms to a shape of the disk spring in the start and end positions and travels therebetween.

11. A device as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the spring covering is molded over the entirety of one side of the disk spring.

12. A device for delivering a medicament into the body of a patient by injection into or through the skin of a patient, comprising:

a housing having a bottom surface adapted to contact the skin of a patient, a top surface viewable by the patient during use of the device, and a longitudinal axis;

an injection needle adapted for penetration of tissue;

a reservoir, disposed within said housing, forming a chamber for containing said medicament, said reservoir being in fluid communication with the injection needle at least subsequent to activation;

only a single disk spring, having a first side, a second side, a central portion, and at least one radial void extending from the central portion of the disk spring, wherein the disk spring has a start position, and an end position; and

a spring covering which extends radially from the central portion and substantially covers the at least one void in the disk spring on at least the first side of the disk spring;

wherein:

the central portion of the disk spring is open;

the spring covering covers the first side of the disk spring, the open central portion, and the at least one void; and

the spring covering conforms to a shape of the disk spring in the start and end positions and travels therebetween.

13. A device for delivering a medicament into the body of a patient by injection into or through the skin of a patient, comprising:

a housing having a bottom surface adapted to contact the skin of a patient, a top surface viewable by the patient during use of the device, and a longitudinal axis;

an injection needle adapted for penetration of tissue;

a reservoir, disposed within said housing, forming a chamber for containing said medicament, said reservoir being in fluid communication with the injection needle at least subsequent to activation;

only a single disk spring, having a first side, a second side, a central portion, and at least one radial void extending from the central portion of the disk spring, wherein the disk spring has a start position, and an end position; and

a spring covering which extends radially from the central portion and substantially covers the at least one void in the disk spring on at least the first side of the disk spring;

wherein the spring covering is molded over the entirety of one side of the disk spring.
