Abstract

A three-dimensional porous photonic structure, whose internal pore surfaces can be provided with desired surface properties in a spatially selective manner with arbitrary patterns, and methods for making the same are described. When exposed to a fluid (e.g., via immersion or wicking), the fluid can selectively penetrate the regions of the structure with compatible surface properties. Broad applications, for example in security, encryption and document authentication, as well as in areas such as simple microfluidics and diagnostics, are anticipated.

Claims (9)

1. A suspension comprising:

a plurality of non-spherical, microstructured photonic crystal particles suspended in a liquid medium, each particle comprising a porous three-dimensional photonic crystal, said photonic crystal comprising a matrix material defining a plurality of pores and a plurality of nanoparticles dispersed within the matrix material,

wherein said plurality of non-spherical, microstructured photonic crystal particle are obtained by templating against a microstructured surface to form photonic crystal particles that have a non-spherical shape defined by the microstructured surface;

wherein the size of the particles, the size of the pores of the photonic crystal, and the size of the nanoparticles provide a response in the visible wavelengths.

2. The suspension of claim 1 , wherein the particles are shaped as bricks, pyramids, or combinations thereof.

3. The suspension of claim 1 , wherein the nanoparticles comprise gold nanoparticles.

4. The suspension of claim 1 , wherein the photonic crystal is an inverse opal structure, a mesoporous silica, a short range order structure exhibiting structural color, a quasicrystal, or mixtures thereof.

5. A paint comprising the suspension of claim 1 .

6. An applicator liquid comprising the suspension of claim 1 .
