Abstract

Briefly, in accordance with one of more embodiments, a fixed device synchronizes with a downlink channel of a network, acquires a master information block including a last system update time; and executes cell selection without acquiring other system information if the last system update time is before the last system access time. Furthermore, the fixed device may listen only for system information block messages that it needs, and ignore other system information blocks. A bitmap may indicate which system information block messages should be listed to for fixed devices, and which may be ignored. In some embodiments, one or more system information blocks may be designated for fixed devices.

Claims (25)

1. An article of manufacture comprising a non-transitory storage medium having instructions stored thereon that, if executed, result in:

synchronizing with a downlink channel of a network;

acquiring system information from the network;

receiving a bitmap from the network, wherein the bitmap indicates which system information block messages that fixed devices should listen to; and

listening for system information block messages indicated in the bitmap;

wherein the bitmap indicates a time of last update for one or more of the system information blocks and wherein the instructions, if executed, further result in:

if one or more of the system information blocks have been updated, receiving the updated system information blocks.

2. An article of manufacture as claimed in claim 1 , wherein one or more the system information block messages indicated in the bitmap are special system information block messages designated for fixed devices.

3. An article of manufacture as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the instructions, if executed, further result in:

ignoring system information blocks that have not been updated if said information system block have been previously received.

4. An article of manufacture as claimed in claim 3 , wherein the bitmap indicates if there has been any change in one or more of the system information blocks and wherein the instructions, if executed, further result in:

if one or more of the system information blocks have been changed, receiving the changed system information blocks.

5. An article of manufacture as claimed in claim 4 , wherein the instructions, if executed, further result in:

ignoring system information blocks that have not been changed if said information system block have been previously received.

6. An apparatus of a user equipment (UE) comprising baseband processing circuitry to:

synchronize with a downlink channel of a network;

acquire system information from the network;

receive a bitmap from the network, wherein the bitmap indicates which system information block messages that fixed devices should listen to;

listen for system information block messages indicated in the bitmap, wherein the bitmap indicates a time of last update for one or more of the system information blocks; and

receive updated system information blocks if one or more of the system information blocks have been updated.

7. The apparatus as claimed in claim 6 , wherein one or more the system information block messages indicated in the bitmap are special system information block messages designated for fixed devices.

8. The apparatus as claimed in claim 6 , wherein the baseband processing circuitry is configured to ignore system information blocks that have not been updated if said information system blocks have been previously received.

9. The apparatus as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the bitmap indicates if there has been any change in one or more of the system information blocks, and the baseband processing circuitry is configured to receive changed system information blocks if one or more of the system information blocks has been changed.

10. The apparatus as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the baseband processing circuitry is configured to ignore system information blocks that have not been changed if said information system block have been previously received.

11. The apparatus as claimed in claim 6 , further comprising an applications processor coupled to the baseband processing circuitry, and a touch screen to receive an input to control the applications processor.
