Abstract

A method for using a downdraft gasifier comprising a housing and a refractory stack contained within the housing. The refractory stack may comprise various sections. Apertures in the sections may be aligned to form multiple columnar cavities. Each columnar cavity may comprise an individual oxidation zone. The method of use may include the steps of placing a feedstock into an upper portion of the refractory stack, measuring the temperature of each columnar cavity, and adjusting the flow of oxygen to a particular columnar cavity to maintain the temperature of the particular columnar cavity within a particular range.

Claims (46)

1. A method comprising:

obtaining a gasifier comprising a housing and a refractory system contained within the housing, the refractory system defining at least one cavity therewithin;

obtaining a gaseous fuel and a solid feedstock;

delivering the gaseous fuel and solid feedstock to the at least one cavity;

reducing, during the delivering, an amount of air entering the at least one cavity with the solid feedstock by lowering below atmospheric pressure at least a portion of a feed system delivering the solid feedstock to the gasifier;

generating synthesis gas in a gasification process within the at least one cavity during the delivering;

conducting the synthesis gas away from the gasifier; and

using the synthesis gas without a hot gas cleanup thereof.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the synthesis gas conducted away from the gasifier is substantially pollutant free.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the gaseous fuel is selected from the group consisting of natural gas and landfill gas.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the refractory system comprises:

an upper manifold;

an intermediate portion;

a lower manifold; and

a plurality of columnar cavities extending vertically through the intermediate portion and placing the upper manifold in communication with the lower manifold.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the upper manifold, at least one columnar cavity of the plurality of columnar cavities, and the lower manifold collectively form the at least one cavity.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the upper manifold, intermediate portion, and lower manifold are each formed of refractory.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the refractory system comprises a stacked assembly including a plurality of separate sections formed of refractory.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the upper manifold forms a first section of the plurality of separate sections.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the lower manifold forms a second section of the plurality of separate sections.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the intermediate portion comprises a third section of the plurality of separate sections.

11. The method of claim 5 , wherein the gasifier further comprises a shaft system comprising at least one motor and a shaft, the shaft extending vertically through the housing, the at least one motor connected to rotate the shaft about an axis extending vertically.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the gasifier further comprises a mixing blade connected to rotate with the shaft and mix contents of the upper manifold.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the gasifier further comprises a grate connected to rotate with the shaft and positioned adjacent the lower manifold.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the gasifier further comprises a plurality of balls supported by the grate.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the each ball of the plurality of balls is formed of ceramic.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein:

the lower manifold has an undulating perimeter; and

relative rotation of the grate with respect to the lower manifold causes the plurality of balls to be agitated by the undulating perimeter.

17. A method comprising:

obtaining a gasifier comprising a housing and a refractory system contained within the housing, the refractory system defining at least one cavity therewithin;

obtaining a feedstock;

delivering the feedstock to the at least one cavity;

reducing, during the delivering, an amount of air entering the at least one cavity with the feedstock by lower below atmospheric pressure at least a portion of a feed system delivering the feedstock to the gasifier;

using the feedstock to generate synthesis gas in a gasification process within the at least one cavity; and

conducting the synthesis gas away from the gasifier.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising:

delivering a gaseous fuel to the at least one cavity; and

using the gaseous fuel to generate synthesis gas in the gasification process within the at least one cavity.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein the conducting comprises generating a lower pressure downstream from the at least one cavity than is present upstream from the at least one cavity.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein the gasifier further comprises

a shaft system comprising at least one motor and a shaft, the shaft extending vertically through the housing, the at least one motor connected to rotate the shaft about an axis extending vertically,

a grate connected to rotate with the shaft and positioned adjacent a lower portion of the at least one cavity,

the lower portion having an undulating perimeter, and

a plurality of ceramic balls supported by the grate; and

the method further comprises generating, by the at least one motor rotating the shaft, relative rotation of the grate with respect to the lower portion, the relative rotation causing the plurality of balls to be agitated by the undulating perimeter.
