Abstract

A fuse component ( 36 ) configured to provide overcurrent protection for an electric motor ( 20 ) comprises a spiral ( 41 ) of a plurality of coaxial wire loops ( 44 ) and an outer insulating sleeve ( 39 ) surrounding at least a portion of the spiral ( 41 ). The overcurrent threshold of the fuse component ( 36 ) may be adjusted by changing the number of loops in the spiral ( 41 ) or the cross-section area of the wire in the spiral ( 41 ). The fuse component ( 41 ) may also function as an inductor ( 35 ) and/or connected to a speed adjustable resistor.

Claims (43)

1. A fuse component for an electric motor, comprising:

a spiral, formed by a single wire continuously wound in a plurality of coaxial loops with two ends and configured to break in response to a current flowing through the wire that exceeds a predetermined threshold;

an outer shell made of an insulating material and having two open ends; and

two end pieces respectively fitted into the two open ends of the outer shell,

wherein at least one end of the wire extends through a corresponding end piece to reach outside the end piece, where the end of the wire is to be welded to a circuit.

2. The fuse component of claim 1 , wherein the wire of the plurality of coaxial loops comprises a copper-clad aluminum wire.

3. The fuse component of claim 2 , wherein the copper-clad aluminum wire is between 20% and 40% copper.

4. The fuse component of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of end pieces are electrically conductive, each end piece has a tube terminal through which the end of the spiral extend, and the tube terminals are welded to the circuit together with the ends of the wire.

5. The fuse component of claim 1 , wherein:

the plurality of end pieces are electrically insulating.

6. The fuse component of claim 1 , wherein the wire in the plurality of coaxial loops has a substantially circular cross-section.

The fuse component of claim 1 , wherein the spiral comprises an inner spiral portion having a plurality of the coaxial loops and an outer spiral portion having a plurality of the coaxial loops, the plurality of the coaxial loops of the inner spiral portion being positioned inside of the plurality of the coaxial loops of the outer spiral portion, such that the plurality of the coaxial loops of the outer spiral portion are larger than the plurality of the coaxial loops of the inner spiral portion.

8. The fuse component of claim 1 , wherein the outer shell comprises bakelite, ceramics, or glass.

9. An electric motor, comprising:

a stator;

a rotor configured to spin within the stator; and

a circuit board attached to the stator and comprising:

a circuit configured to transfer electrical current to the rotor;

at least one fuse component connected in series with the circuit, comprising:

a spiral formed by a single wire continuously wound in a plurality of coaxial wire loops with two ends and configured to interrupt a current flowing to the rotor in response to the current exceeding a predetermined threshold;

an outer shell made of an insulating material and having two open ends; and

two end pieces respectively fitted into the two open ends of the outer shell,

wherein each end of the spiral extends through a respective end piece to reach outside the end piece, where the end of the spiral is to be welded to the circuit.

10. The electric motor of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of coaxial wire loops comprises a copper-clad aluminum wire.

11. The electric motor of claim 10 , wherein the copper-clad aluminum wire is between 20% and 40% copper.

12. The electric motor of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of end pieces are electrically conductive, each end piece has a tube terminal through which the end of the spiral extend, and the tube terminals are welded to the circuit together with the ends of the spiral.

13. The electric motor of claim 9 , wherein:

the plurality of end pieces are electrically insulating.

14. The electric motor of claim 9 , wherein the wire in the plurality of coaxial loops has a substantially circular cross-section.

The electric motor of claim 9 , wherein the spiral comprises an inner spiral portion having a plurality of the coaxial wire loops and an outer spiral portion having a plurality of the coaxial wire loops, the plurality of the coaxial wire loops of the inner spiral portion being positioned inside of the plurality of the coaxial wire loops of the outer spiral portion, such that the plurality of the coaxial wire loops of the outer spiral portion are larger than the plurality of the coaxial wire loops of the inner spiral portion.

16. The electric motor of claim 9 , wherein the outer shell comprises bakelite, ceramics, or glass.

The fuse component of claim 1 , wherein each end piece includes a plug portion and an end portion, wherein an outer diameter of the plug portion is substantially the same as an inner diameter of the open ends of the outer shell, and wherein the end portion projects outward from the plug portion along an axis that is aligned with a central axis of the outer shell.

The electric motor of claim 9 , wherein each end piece includes a plug portion and an end portion, wherein an outer diameter of the plug portion is substantially the same as an inner diameter of the open ends of the outer shell, and wherein the end portion projects outward from the plug portion along an axis that is aligned with a central axis of the outer shell.

19. a fan assembly, comprising:

a motor;

a resistor configured to adjust the speed of the motor, the resistor electrically connected to the motor; and

a fuse component according to claim 1 connected in series with the resistor.

20. An electric motor, comprising:

a stator;

a rotor configured to spin within the stator; and

a circuit board attached to the stator and comprising:

a circuit configured to transfer electrical current to the rotor;

at least one fuse component according to claim 1 , the at least one fuse being connected in series with the circuit.
