Abstract

A method includes accessing a webpage at a web server from a mobile application executing at a mobile device. A mobile application tag may be identified in the webpage, where the mobile application tag is independent of a device type of the mobile device. The method also includes determining that the mobile application tag corresponds to a native device function of the mobile device and accessing the native device function.

Claims (28)

1. A processor-readable storage device storing instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving, by a mobile application executing at a mobile device, a webpage from a web server, wherein the webpage includes a mobile application tag, and wherein the mobile application tag is independent of a first device type of the mobile device;

performing a native device function of the mobile device based on a mapping of the mobile application tag to the native device function;

receiving, at the mobile device, a first message in a first format, the first format independent of the first device type of the mobile device and independent of a second device type of a second device; and

sending, from the mobile device to the second device, a second message generated at the mobile device based on the first message, the second message displayable in a second format that is based on the second device type of the second device.

2. The processor-readable storage device of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise identifying an additional tag added to the webpage without altering the mobile application, wherein the additional tag corresponds to a second native device function of the mobile device.

3. The processor-readable storage device of claim 1 , wherein the mobile application tag comprises a tag associated with a web scripting language.

4. A method comprising:

receiving, by a mobile device, a webpage from a web server, wherein the webpage includes a mobile application tag, and wherein the mobile application tag is independent of a first device type of the mobile device;

performing, at the mobile device, a native device function of the mobile device based on a mapping of the mobile application tag to the native device function;

receiving, at the mobile device, a first message in a first format, the first format independent of the first device type of the mobile device and independent of a second device type of a second device; and

sending, from the mobile device to the second device, a second message generated at the mobile device based on the first message, the second message displayable in a second format that is based on the second device type of the second device.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the webpage comprises a hypertext markup language webpage, and wherein the mobile application tag comprises a tag associated with a web scripting language.

6. The method of claim 4 , further comprising mapping the mobile application tag to the native device function.

7. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

identifying an additional tag added to the webpage without altering the mobile application tag, wherein the additional tag corresponds to a second native device function of the mobile device; and

accessing the second native device function at the mobile device.

8. The processor-readable storage device of claim 1 , wherein performing the native device function comprises enabling a user to initiate performance of the native device function by the mobile device.

9. The processor-readable storage device of claim 1 , wherein the operations further include mapping the mobile application tag to the native device function.

The processor-readable storage device of claim 9 , wherein mapping the mobile application tag to the native device function comprises identifying, by the mobile application, the native device function based on the application tag and independent of creation of native binaries to translate between the application tag and a native code of a particular platform of the mobile device.

The processor-readable storage device of claim 9 , wherein mapping the mobile application tag to the native device function comprises identifying, by the mobile application, the native device function based on the application tag and independent of creation of native binaries to translate between a web based language a second script language and a native code of a particular platform of the mobile device, and wherein the web based language is hyper text markup language (HTML).

The processor-readable storage device of claim 9 , wherein mapping the mobile application tag to the native device function comprises compiling, by the mobile device, the application tag without inclusion of native binaries that translate to platform specific code and the mapping between the application tags and the native device function.

13. The processor-readable storage device of claim 1 , wherein the first device type is selected from a group consisting of a mobile telephone, a smartphone, a touchscreen computing device, a portable media player, some other mobile device, or any combination thereof.

14. The method of claim 4 , wherein the first format includes a platform-agnostic message format, and wherein the second format includes a platform-specific display format.

15. The method of claim 4 , wherein display of the second message in the second format includes presentation of a user interface control, wherein the second device is configured to display the user interface control in a native style of the second device, and wherein the user interface control is associated with a second native device function of the second device.

The method of claim 15 , wherein the second native device function comprises a camera function, a global positioning system (GPS) function, a telephone function, a messaging function, an electronic mail function, a social networking function, a file management function, an application function, a contacts browsing function, a multimedia function, a short message service (SMS) function, a photo upload function, a stream audio/video content function, or any combination thereof.

17. The method of claim 4 , further comprising sending a request to a network device, the request associated with enabling notifications to the second device, wherein the first message includes an identifier associated with the second device.

18. The method of claim 4 , wherein the type of the mobile device includes one of a mobile telephone, a smartphone, a touchscreen computing device, or a portable media player.
