Abstract

A housing for a personal electronic device is described herein. The housing may include at least one modular subassembly configured to be arranged within an internal cavity of the housing. The at least one modular subassembly is aligned with a feature external to the housing, is affixed to an interior surface of the internal cavity, and is configured to function both as an antenna and as an internal support member of the housing. A hybrid antenna is also described herein. The hybrid antenna can include first and second flexible members capable of facilitating wireless communication, where the first and second flexible members are affixed to one another via a metal member.

Claims (27)

1 . A hybrid antenna, comprising:

a first flexible member capable of facilitating wireless communication; and

a second flexible member capable of facilitating wireless communication, wherein the second flexible member and the first flexible member are affixed to one another via a metal member.

2 . The hybrid antenna of claim 1 , wherein each of the first flexible member and the second flexible member is a flexible printed circuit board.

3 . The hybrid antenna of claim 1 , wherein other components are affixed to the first flexible member and/or the second flexible member in addition to the metal member.

4 . The hybrid antenna of claim 1 , wherein the first flexible member and the second flexible member are disposed at a different z-position to one another within a housing of a personal electronic device.

5 . The hybrid antenna of claim 4 , wherein the metal member is composed of a piece of sheet metal that is stamped to include a step feature that enables the metal member to affix the first flexible member to the second flexible member despite their differences in z-position.

6 . The hybrid antenna of claim 1 , wherein the first flexible member functions as a main antenna and the second flexible member functions as a secondary antenna.

7 . The hybrid antenna of claim 1 , wherein the metal member is composed of material that enables receipt and transmission of wireless signals.

8 . The hybrid antenna of claim 1 , wherein the hybrid antenna is configured to be included in a portable computing device.

9 . The hybrid antenna of claim 8 , wherein, within the portable computing device, the first flexible member is positioned over a component included in the portable computing device and cause the first flexible member to be disposed at a higher z-position than the second flexible member.

10 . The hybrid antenna of claim 9 , wherein the component is a vibration component.

11 . A method for assembling a hybrid antenna, comprising:

forming a first flexible member capable of facilitating wireless communication;

forming a second flexible member capable of facilitating wireless communication;

forming a metal member;

affixing the metal member to the first flexible member; and

affixing the metal member to the second flexible member to interconnect the first flexible member and the second flexible member.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein each of the first flexible member and the second flexible member is a flexible printed circuit board.

13 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising affixing other components to the first flexible member and/or the second flexible member in addition to the metal member.

14 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising disposing the first flexible member and the second flexible at a different z-position to one another within a housing of a personal electronic device.

15 . The method claim 11 , wherein forming the metal member involves stamping a piece of sheet metal to include a step feature that enables the metal member to affix the first flexible member to the second flexible member despite their differences in z-position.

16 . The method claim 11 , wherein the first flexible member functions as a main antenna and the second flexible member functions as a secondary antenna.

17 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the metal member is composed of material that enables receipt and transmission of wireless signals.

18 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the hybrid antenna is configured to be included in a portable computing device.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein, within the portable computing device, the first flexible member is positioned over a component included in the portable computing device and cause the first flexible member to be disposed at a higher z-position than the second flexible member.

20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the component is a vibration component.
