Abstract

Apparatus ( 20 ) for injection of fluid into extrusion system components such as a preconditioner ( 24 ) or extruder ( 100 ) is provided, preferably as a composite assembly including a fluid injection valve ( 52 ) and an interconnected static mixer section ( 54 ). Alternately, use may be made of the fluid injection valve ( 52 ) or static mixer section ( 54 ) alone. The invention greatly simplifies the fluid injection apparatus used in extrusion systems, while giving more efficient absorption of thermal energy with a minimum of environmental contamination, and the ability to inject multiple streams into the extrusion systems.

Claims (21)

1. A preconditioner comprising:

an elongated housing having sidewall structure, a material inlet, a spaced material outlet, and a fluid passageway through said sidewall structure and presenting an innermost injection opening in communication with the interior of the housing;

at least one elongated, axially rotatable shaft extending along the length of said housing and having a plurality of outwardly extending mixing elements secured to the shaft;

apparatus for the injection of fluid into said housing, comprising an injector valve operably coupled with said fluid passageway in order to permit selective injection of fluid into the housing during processing of material therein, said injector valve including a fluid inlet, a fluid outlet, and shiftable valve structure permitting selective control of the flow of fluid from the fluid inlet to and through the fluid outlet,

the axial distance between said valve fluid outlet and said housing sidewall innermost injection opening being less than about three inches; and

an elongated static mixer having a mixed fluid outlet operably coupled with said injector valve in order to deliver a mixed fluid to said injector valve fluid inlet.

2. The preconditioner of claim 1 , said static mixer including an elongated casing having a plurality of fluid inlets, and a stationary mixing assembly within said casing and operable to mix said plural fluids for delivery to said injector valve fluid inlet.

3. The preconditioner of claim 2 , said mixing assembly including an elongated central shaft with a plurality of generally helical, outwardly extending plates secured to said shaft.

4. The preconditioner of claim 1 , said static mixer casing extending upwardly from said injector valve.

5. The preconditioner of claim 1 , said valve structure comprising a spherical valve ball with a fluid passage therethrough.

6. The preconditioner of claim 1 , including an actuator operably coupled with said valve structure for selective shifting thereof.

7. The preconditioner of claim 1 , said passageway having a diameter of at least about one inch.

8. The preconditioner of claim 1 , there being a pair of elongated, spaced apart, axially rotatable mixing shafts within said housing, each of said shafts supporting a plurality of outwardly extending mixing elements, the mixing elements of the shafts being axially offset and intercalated, and a drive assembly operably coupled with said shafts in order to selectively rotate the shafts at the same or different rotational speeds and/or in the same or different rotational directions, said housing sidewall structure being transversely arcuate and presenting a pair of elongated, juxtaposed, intercommunicating chambers, with one of the chambers having a larger cross-sectional area than the other chamber, said shafts respectively extending along the length of the chambers.

9. The preconditioner of claim 1 , said preconditioner being for preconditioning comestible materials, said housing presenting a comestible material inlet and a spaced preconditioned comestible outlet, said static mixer having a plurality of fluid inlets, with one of the inlets being a water inlet, the preconditioner operable to mix said comestible materials with said fluids including said water, in order to moisturize said comestible materials.

10. A preconditioner for preconditioning comestible materials, comprising:

an elongated housing having sidewall structure, a comestible material inlet, a spaced preconditioned material outlet, and a fluid passageway through said sidewall structure and presenting an innermost opening in communication with the interior of the housing;

at least one elongated, axially rotatable shaft extending along the length of said housing and having a plurality of outwardly extending mixing elements secured to the shaft;

apparatus for the injection of fluid into said housing, comprising an injector valve operably coupled with said fluid passageway in order to permit selective injection of fluid into the housing during processing of material therein, said injector valve including a fluid inlet, a fluid outlet, and shiftable valve structure permitting selective control of the flow of fluid from the fluid inlet to and through the fluid outlet; and

an elongated static mixer having a plurality of fluid inlets, one of said fluid inlets being a water or steam inlet, and a mixed fluid outlet operably coupled with said injector valve in order to deliver a mixed fluid to said injector valve fluid inlet,

the preconditioner operable to mix said comestible materials with said fluids and water, in order to moisturize the comestible materials.

11. The precondition of claim 10 , said valve structure comprising a spherical valve ball with a passage therethrough.
