Managing email content in an activity stream

1. A method of managing email content in an activity stream with an electronic device, comprising:

receiving a selection of a number of criteria to distinguish email content to be presented in the activity stream from unrelated email content to be displayed in an email network, wherein:

the email network allows users to communicate via email messages; and

the activity stream is a separate channel from the email network and presents notifications and updates to content selected by a user;

retrieving, based on satisfaction of the number of criteria, the email content to be presented in the activity stream based on the number of criteria;

sending metadata relating to the email content to be presented in the activity stream from the email network to the activity stream to be presented, wherein the metadata includes information to identify the email content to be presented in the activity stream;

displaying the email content in the activity stream by referencing the metadata related to the email content to be presented in the activity stream; and

preventing the email content to be presented in the activity stream from being displayed in the email network.

2. The method of claim 1 , in which the number of criteria comprises individuals, topics, tags, groups, communities, or combinations thereof.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising retrieving other email content based on an action taken against the other email content.

4. The method of claim 3 , in which an action taken against the other email content comprises selecting an icon.

5. The method of claim 3 , in which an action taken against the other email content comprises replying to an email message.

6. The method of claim 1 , in which the email content data remains on the email network through which the email content is sent.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising preventing the display of the email content in an email inbox.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sending metadata relating to subsequent email content related to the retrieved email content to the activity stream.

9. A method of displaying email content in an activity stream with an electronic device, comprising:

receiving user selection of a number of criteria to distinguish email content to be presented in the activity stream from unrelated email content to be displayed in an email network, wherein:

the email network allows users to communicate via email messages; and

the activity stream is a separate channel from the email network and

presents notifications and updates to content selected by a user;

receiving, from the email network, metadata related to email content to be presented in the activity stream, the email content retrieved based on satisfaction of a number of selected criteria;

receiving an instruction to display the email content; and

displaying the email content in the activity stream based by referencing the metadata related to the email content to be presented in the activity stream; and

preventing the email content to be presented in the activity stream from being displayed in the email network.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising displaying, in the activity stream, subsequent email content based on the email content.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising allowing generation of subsequent email content in the activity stream.

12. The method of claim 11 , in which generation of subsequent email content includes forwarding, replying to, or sharing the email content within the activity stream.

13. The method of claim 9 , further comprising preventing the display, in the activity stream, of unrelated email content.

14. The method of claim 9 , further comprising displaying, in the activity stream, other content relating to the email content.

15. The method of claim 9 , further comprising receiving metadata related to other email content retrieved based on an action taken against the other email content.

16. A method of managing email content in an activity stream with an electronic device, comprising:

receiving user selection of content of interest for the user;

receiving user selection of a number of criteria that distinguish email content to be presented in the activity stream from unrelated email content to be displayed in an email network, wherein:

the email network allows users to communicate via email messages; and

the activity stream:

is a separate channel from the email network that stores the email content; and

presents notifications and updates to content selected by the user;

retrieving the email content to be presented in the activity stream based on satisfaction of the number of criteria, an action taken against the email content, or combinations thereof;

sending metadata relating to the email content to be presented in the activity stream from the email network to the activity stream to be presented, wherein:

metadata relating to the unrelated email content remains on the email network;

email content data related to the email content to be presented in the activity stream and email content data related to the unrelated email content remain on the email network; and

the metadata includes information to identify the email content to be presented in the activity stream;

displaying the email content in the activity stream by referencing metadata related to the email content to be presented in the activity stream; and

preventing the email content to be presented in the activity stream from being displayed in the email network.

17. The method of claim 16 , in which retrieving email content based on the number of criteria is performed when a number of recipients of the email content is less than a threshold number.

18. The method of claim 16 , in which the email content is exclusively displayed in the activity stream.

19. The method of claim 16 , further comprising providing services related to the email content.

20. The method of claim 1 , further comprising allowing user interaction with the email content through the activity stream without the user interacting with the email network.
