Abstract

An orthopedic fixation system includes a sterile packaged implant kit and a sterile packaged instrument kit. The sterile packaged implant kit includes at least one surgical implant, an insertion device, and an implant package adapted to receive the at least one surgical implant and the insertion device therein. The implant package maintains the at least one surgical implant and the insertion device sterile after sterilization of the sterile packaged implant kit. The sterile packaged instrument kit includes one or more instruments necessary to use the sterile packaged implant kit and an instrument package adapted to receive the one or more instruments therein. The instrument package maintains the one or more instruments sterile after sterilization of the sterile packaged instrument kit.

Claims (57)

1 - 17 . (canceled)

18 . A method of packaging an orthopedic fixation system, comprising:

providing an implant, comprising legs movable between a first convergent position and a second substantially parallel position, wherein movement of the legs from the first convergent position to the second substantially parallel position imparts a compressive force to the implant, further wherein movement of the legs from the second substantially parallel position to the first convergent position releases the compressive force from the implant;

loading an insertion device with the implant, wherein the insertion device maintains the legs in their second substantially parallel position such that the implant stores the compressive force;

inserting the insertion device loaded with the implant into an implant tray;

inserting a drill guide into the implant tray;

enclosing the implant tray;

inserting a drill bit into an instrument tray;

inserting an implant tamp into the instrument tray;

inserting one or more locating pins into the instrument tray;

inserting an instrument handle into the instrument tray;

enclosing the instrument tray;

sterilizing the enclosed implant tray and the insertion device loaded with the implant and the drill guide therein; and

sterilizing the enclosed instrument tray and the drill bit, the implant tamp, the one or more locating pins, and the instrument handle therein.

19 . The method of packaging an orthopedic fixation system of claim 18 , wherein enclosing the implant tray, comprises:

inserting an implant outer cover over the implant tray; and

securing an implant seal over the implant outer cover.

20 . The method of packaging an orthopedic fixation system of claim 18 , wherein enclosing the instrument tray, comprises:

inserting an instrument outer cover over the instrument tray; and

securing an instrument seal over the instrument outer cover.

21 . (canceled)

22 . A method of packaging an orthopedic fixation system, comprising:

providing an implant, comprising legs movable between a first convergent position and a second substantially parallel position, wherein movement of the legs from the first convergent position to the second substantially parallel position imparts a compressive force to the implant, further wherein movement of the legs from the second substantially parallel position to the first convergent position releases the compressive force from the implant;

loading an insertion device with the implant, wherein the insertion device maintains the legs in their second substantially parallel position such that the implant stores the compressive force;

inserting the insertion device loaded with the implant into an implant package;

closing the implant package;

sterilizing the closed implant package and the insertion device loaded with the implant therein.

23 . The method of packaging an orthopedic fixation system of claim 22 , wherein inserting the insertion device loaded with the implant into the implant package and closing the implant package, comprises:

inserting the insertion device loaded with the implant into an implant tray shaped to hold therein the insertion device loaded with the implant;

inserting an implant outer cover over the implant tray; and

securing an implant seal over the implant outer cover.

24 . The method of packaging an orthopedic fixation system of claim 22 further comprising:

inserting a drill guide into the implant package;

closing the implant package; and

sterilizing the closed implant package and the insertion device loaded with the implant and the drill guide therein.

25 . The method of packaging an orthopedic fixation system of claim 24 , wherein inserting a drill guide into the implant package and closing the implant package, comprises:

inserting the drill guide into an implant tray shaped to hold therein the drill guide;

inserting an implant outer cover over the implant tray; and

securing an implant seal over the implant outer cover.

26 . A method of packaging an orthopedic fixation system, comprising:

providing an implant, comprising legs movable between a first position and a second position, wherein movement of the legs from the first position to the second position imparts a force to the implant, further wherein movement of the legs from the second position to the first position releases the force from the implant;

loading an insertion device with the implant, wherein the insertion device maintains the legs in their second position such that the implant stores the force;

inserting the insertion device loaded with the implant into an implant package;

closing the implant package;

sterilizing the closed implant package and the insertion device loaded with the implant therein.

27 . The method of packaging an orthopedic fixation system of claim 26 , wherein inserting the insertion device loaded with the implant into the implant package and closing the implant package, comprises:

inserting the insertion device loaded with the implant into an implant tray shaped to hold therein the insertion device loaded with the implant;

inserting an implant outer cover over the implant tray; and

securing an implant seal over the implant outer cover.

28 . The method of packaging an orthopedic fixation system of claim 22 further comprising:

inserting a drill guide into the implant package;

closing the implant package; and

sterilizing the closed implant package and the insertion device loaded with the implant and the drill guide therein.

29 . The method of packaging an orthopedic fixation system of claim 29 , wherein inserting a drill guide into the implant package and closing the implant package, comprises:

inserting the drill guide into an implant tray shaped to hold therein the drill guide;

inserting an implant outer cover over the implant tray; and

securing an implant seal over the implant outer cover.
