Abstract

A spinal implant tool set includes end guide tools having flexible back wall flaps that receive opposite ends of the rod and intermediate guide tools that hold the rod in intermediate locations between the end guide tools. Both the end and intermediate guide tools include an attachment structure for operably connecting the guide tool to a bone screw. A multi-function installation tool and a bone screw driver each mate and cooperate with the guide tools. A method utilizing the tool set allows a surgeon to percutaneously implant the bone screws and the rod in the patient.

Claims (17)

1. A bone anchor receiver attachable to a tool and configured to receive a rod, the bone anchor receiver comprising:

a receiver base and a pair of opposed upright arms with inwardly facing surfaces forming a rod-receiving channel therebetween and extending transverse to a longitudinal axis of the receiver, the rod-receiving channel opening onto each of a top surface of the receiver, an outwardly facing front surface of the receiver and an outwardly facing back surface of the receiver opposite the outwardly facing front surface, the receiver base and opposed upright arms having lateral side outwardly facing surfaces opposite the inwardly facing surfaces forming the channel;

the receiver further including a horizontal radiused tool attachment structure formed into the lateral side outwardly facing surfaces of each upright arm and spaced from the top surface, each tool attachment structure extending to at least one of the outwardly facing front and back surfaces;

wherein each horizontal radiused tool attachment structure includes an upper edge downwardly facing surface, a lower edge upwardly facing surface and a recessed radiused surface extending vertically between and connecting the downwardly facing surface and the upwardly facing surface, the recessed radiused surface extending horizontally along the upright arms and being parallel to the longitudinal axis; and

wherein the receiver outwardly facing front and back surfaces each include a first planar surface portion extending along the front and back surface at least partially below the upper edge downwardly facing surface of each horizontal radiused tool attachment structure, the first planar surface portions being parallel with respect to each other, and the receiver base and upright arm lateral side outwardly facing surfaces each include a second planar surface portion extending along the lateral side outwardly facing surface at least partially below the upper edge downwardly facing surface of each horizontal radiused tool attachment structure, the second planar surface portions being parallel with respect to each other and perpendicular to the first planar surface portions.

2. The bone anchor receiver of claim 1 , further comprising a closure.

3. The bone anchor receiver of claim 2 , wherein the closure and the tool attachment structure are configured such that when a tool is engaged with the tool attachment structure, the closure is insertable into the channel.

4. The bone anchor receiver of claim 3 , wherein when the closure is inserted and the tool is removed, the receiver top surface and the upright arm lateral side outwardly facing surfaces remain uncovered.

5. The bone anchor receiver of claim 2 , wherein the closure has a mating guide and advancement structure on an exterior surface thereof configured to directly mate with a guide and advancement structure on the upright arms.

6. The bone anchor receiver of claim 2 , wherein the closure is configured to directly contact the rod and lock the rod in the rod-receiving channel.

7. The bone anchor receiver of claim 1 , wherein each of the upright arms has a guide and advancement structure formed on the inwardly facing surface thereof.

8. The bone anchor receiver of claim 1 , wherein when the rod is locked within the rod-receiving channel, a top surface of the rod is disposed below each of the horizontal radiused tool attachment structure upper edge downwardly facing surfaces.

9. The bone anchor receiver of claim 1 , wherein the second planar surface portions are coplanar with respect to the receiver base and opposed upright arm lateral side outwardly facing surfaces.

10. The bone anchor receiver of claim 1 , wherein the first and second planar surface portions are faceted with respect to the receiver outwardly facing front and back surfaces and the lateral side outwardly facing surfaces.

11. The bone anchor receiver of claim 1 , further comprising a shank, the shank having an upper end portion positionable within a lower cavity of the receiver base, the cavity communicating with the channel and a bottom surface of the receiver base through a lower opening.

12. The bone anchor receiver of claim 11 , wherein the shank is pivotal with respect to the receiver.

13. The bone anchor receiver of claim 11 , wherein the shank is cannulated.
