Abstract

A gas turbine engine includes a compressor section, a combustor in fluid communication with the compressor section, a turbine section in fluid communication with the combustor, and a buffer system. The buffer system can include a first circuit that supplies a first buffer supply air and a second circuit that supplies a second buffer supply air. The first circuit can include a first bleed air supply a second bleed air supply and at least one of an ejector and a valve. The second circuit can include a third bleed air supply, a fourth bleed air supply and at least one of an ejector and a valve.

Claims (33)

1. A gas turbine engine, comprising:

a compressor section;

a combustor in fluid communication with said compressor section;

a turbine section in fluid communication with said combustor;

a buffer system including a first circuit that supplies a first buffer supply air and a second circuit that supplies a second buffer supply air;

wherein said first circuit includes a first bleed air supply, a second bleed air supply and at least one of an ejector and a valve; and

wherein said second circuit includes a third bleed air supply, a fourth bleed air supply and at least one of an ejector and a valve.

2. The gas turbine engine as recited in claim 1 , wherein one of said first circuit and said second circuit includes a conditioning device.

3. The gas turbine engine as recited in claim 1 , wherein said ejector is a variable area ejector.

4. The gas turbine engine as recited in claim 1 , wherein the gas turbine engine is a high bypass geared aircraft engine having a bypass ratio of greater than about six (6).

5. The gas turbine engine as recited in claim 1 , wherein the gas turbine engine includes a low Fan Pressure Ratio of less than about 1.45.

6. The gas turbine engine as recited in claim 1 , wherein said first circuit includes one of said ejector and said valve and said second circuit includes the other of said ejector and said valve.

7. A gas turbine engine, comprising:

a compressor section;

a combustor in fluid communication with said compressor section;

a turbine section in fluid communication with said combustor;

a buffer system including a first circuit configured to supply a first buffer supply air and a second circuit configured to supply a second buffer supply air;

said first circuit including a first bleed air supply, a second bleed air supply and an ejector configured to mix said first bleed air supply having a first pressure and said second bleed air supply having a second pressure that is greater than said first pressure to provide said first buffer supply air having an intermediate pressure to said first pressure and said second pressure; and

said second circuit including a third bleed air supply, a fourth bleed air supply, a valve and a conditioning device.

8. The gas turbine engine as recited in claim 7 , wherein said valve is in communication with said third bleed air supply and said fourth bleed air supply.

9. The gas turbine engine as recited in claim 7 , wherein said valve is configured to select between said third bleed air supply and said fourth bleed air supply to communicate said second buffer supply air.

10. The gas turbine engine as recited in claim 7 , wherein said conditioning device is configured to cool said second buffer supply air.

11. The gas turbine engine as recited in claim 7 , wherein said first buffer supply air is communicated to a first portion of the gas turbine engine and the second buffer supply air is communicated to a second portion of the gas turbine engine.

12. The gas turbine engine as recited in claim 11 , wherein said first portion of the gas turbine engine includes front and rear bearing compartments and said second portion of the gas turbine engine includes mid-engine bearing compartments.

13. The gas turbine engine as recited in claim 7 , comprising a controller in communication with said ejector and said valve and configured to control communication of said first buffer supply air and said second buffer supply air at desired pressures and temperatures.

14. The gas turbine engine as recited in claim 13 , wherein said controller is configured to command operation of said conditioning device for selectively cooling said second buffer supply air.

15. A gas turbine engine, comprising:

a compressor section;

a combustor in fluid communication with said compressor section;

a turbine section in fluid communication with said combustor;

a buffer system including a first circuit configured to supply a first buffer supply air to front and rear bearing compartments of the gas turbine engine and a second circuit configured to supply a second buffer supply air to mid-engine bearing compartments of the gas turbine engine;

said first circuit including a first bleed air supply, a second bleed air supply and at least one of an ejector and a valve; and

said second circuit including a third bleed air supply, a fourth bleed air supply and at least one of an ejector and a valve.
