Staple line reinforcement for anvil and cartridge
A surgical stapling apparatus including a cartridge assembly defining a first tissue contacting surface, an anvil assembly defining a second tissue contacting surface, and a surgical buttress releasably secured to at least one of the first tissue contacting surface and the second tissue contacting surface is provided. The buttress provides a uniform profile to be used on both the anvil and cartridge of a loading unit.
1. A surgical buttress for a surgical stapler having a staple cartridge assembly and an anvil assembly, the surgical buttress comprising a body portion configured to substantially overlie either the staple cartridge assembly or the anvil assembly, the surgical buttress defining a distal attachment feature, a first proximal attachment feature, and a second proximal attachment feature in at least one lateral edge of the body portion, at least one of the distal attachment feature, the first proximal attachment feature, or the second proximal attachment feature being at least one recess defined in the at least one lateral edge of the body portion, the first proximal attachment feature being offset an axial distance from the second proximal attachment feature, the first proximal attachment feature positioned for registering with a proximal attachment point of the staple cartridge assembly, and the second proximal attachment feature positioned for registering with a proximal attachment point of the anvil assembly.
2. The surgical buttress according to claim 1 , wherein the first proximal attachment feature is the at least one recess defined in the at least one lateral edge of the body portion.
3. The surgical buttress according to claim 1 , wherein the second proximal attachment feature is the at least one recess defined in the at least one lateral edge of the body portion.
4. The surgical buttress according to claim 1 , wherein the distal attachment feature is the at least one recess defined in the at least one lateral edge of the body portion.
5. The surgical buttress according to claim 1 , wherein the body portion is fabricated from a biocompatible and bioabsorbable material.
6. The surgical buttress according to claim 1 , wherein the body portion defines a recess formed in a proximal edge thereof.
7. The surgical buttress according to claim 6 , wherein the recess is a notch having a v-shape profile.
8. The surgical buttress according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the distal attachment feature, the first proximal attachment feature, or the second proximal attachment feature is a pair of recesses defined in opposed lateral edges of the body portion.
9. The surgical buttress according to claim 1 , further comprising a head portion and a neck portion.
10. A surgical buttress for a surgical stapler having a staple cartridge assembly and an anvil assembly, the surgical buttress comprising a body portion configured to substantially overlie either the staple cartridge assembly or the anvil assembly, the surgical buttress defining first and second proximal attachment features in at least one lateral edge of the body portion, at least one of the first or second proximal attachment features being at least one recess defined in the at least one lateral edge of the body portion, the first and second proximal attachment features being configured for registration with the staple cartridge assembly or the anvil assembly.
11. The surgical buttress according to claim 10 , wherein the first proximal attachment feature is the at least one recess defined in the at least one lateral edge of the body portion.
12. The surgical buttress according to claim 10 , wherein the second proximal attachment feature is the at least one recess defined in the at least one lateral edge of the body portion.
13. The surgical buttress according to claim 10 , further comprising a distal attachment feature that is at least one recess defined in the at least one lateral edge of the body portion.
14. The surgical buttress according to claim 10 , wherein the body portion is fabricated from a biocompatible and bioabsorbable material.
15. The surgical buttress according to claim 10 , wherein the body portion of the surgical buttress defines a recess formed in a proximal edge thereof.
16. The surgical buttress according to claim 15 , wherein the recess is a notch having a v-shape profile.
17. The surgical buttress according to claim 10 , wherein at least one of the first proximal attachment feature or the second proximal attachment feature includes a pair of recesses defined in opposed lateral edges of the body portion.
18. The surgical buttress according to claim 10 , further comprising a head portion and a neck portion.
