Abstract

Non-conductive films for constructing lighter than air balloons are provided. A non-conductive film may include multiple layers of gas barrier polymers. An outer surface printable layer and an interior heat or ultrasonically sealable layer may also be included. Each gas barrier film may include multiple (e.g., from 3 to approximately 75) barrier layers. A gas barrier core has a nano-layer structure. A gas barrier core may also include a biodegradable film or a bio-based film. A non-conductive film may include a metal layer for enhancing gas barrier properties. The metal layer may be discontinuous. The metal layer may be conductive and coated with an insulating top coat.

Claims (18)

1. A lighter than air balloon, consisting of:

a non-conductive film or envelope consisting of:

a polyolefin layer;

a heat sealing layer;

a first adhesive layer;

a second adhesive layer; and

a gas barrier core comprising a first surface and a second surface, the gas barrier core consisting of a first nylon film, a second nylon film and an ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) film, wherein the first nylon film and the second nylon film sandwich the EVOH film; barrier core consisting of a first nylon film and a second nylon film, such that the first nylon film and the second nylon film sandwich an EVOH film placed in between the gas barrier layers;

the polyolefin layer affixed to the first surface of the gas barrier core; and

the heat sealing layer affixed to the second surface of the gas barrier core;

the first adhesive layer affixing the polyolefin layer to the first surface of the gas barrier core;

the second adhesive layer affixing the heat sealing layer to the second surface of the gas barrier core;

a surface treatment applied to the polyolefin layer;

a metal adhesion prevention agent comprising oil deposited on the surface treated polyolefin layer to create a pattern; and

a metal layer comprising aluminum vapor deposited over the patterned polyolefin layer resulting in a patterned aluminum layer;

wherein the surface treatment of the polyolefin layer is configured to enhance surface receptivity to the vapor deposited aluminum;

wherein the patterned aluminum layer comprises islands of electrically isolated, continuous, conductive deposits of metal.

2. The lighter than air balloon, of claim 1 , wherein the gas barrier core is located off center of the film.

3. The lighter than air balloon, of claim 1 , wherein the polyolefin layer comprises a functionalized polymer.
