Abstract

An apparatus for applying surgical clips has a body portion housing a clip stack and a pair of jaws supported at a distal end of the body portion. The body portion includes a camming member, a clip follower and a lockout member having a plurality of stop members. The lockout member is movable from a first position in slidable relation to the camming member to a second position interlocked with the camming member. The camming member has at least one notch, and in a second position the lockout member has at least one of the stop members positioned to interface with the at least one notch. The engagement between the stop member and the notch limits distal movement of the camming member. The clip follower actuates the lockout member when the clip follower advances to a predetermined clip in the clip stack.

Claims (50)

a clip follower spring disposed proximal to the clip follower and biasing the clip follower distally to engage the clip stack;

a separator plate fixedly supported therein, wherein the separator plate defines at least one projection;

a lockout member having at least one stop member, the lockout member being movable from a first position in slidable relation to the camming member to a second position interlocked with the camming member; and

a lockout spring coupling the at least one projection of the separator plate and the lockout member, the lockout spring configured to bias the lockout member relative to the separator plate;

wherein in the second position of the lockout member, the at least one stop member of the lockout member is positioned in the at least one notch of the camming member, the engagement between the at least one stop member and the at least one notch limiting distal movement of the camming member; and

wherein the clip follower actuates the lockout member when the clip follower advances to a predetermined clip in the clip stack.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a pair of jaws fixedly supported at a distal end of the body portion;

wherein the clip pusher is operable to advance a distal-most clip of the clip stack to a position between the pair of jaws;

wherein the camming member is operable to approximate the pair of jaws to deform the distal-most clip positioned between the pair of jaws; and

wherein the clip follower is operable to urge the clip stack distally towards the pair of jaws.

3. The apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein the lockout member includes a pair of opposed flexible legs, and wherein the camming member defines a pair of opposed notches each being configured to receive a respective one of the pair of flexible legs.

4. The apparatus according to claim 2 , further comprising a clip retainer member configured to bias the clip stack proximally, the clip retainer member limiting movement of the clip stack so only a distal most clip is advanced between the pair of jaws by the clip pusher.

5. The apparatus according to claim 2 , further comprising a jaw locking member having a cantilevered free end and a fixed end connected to the housing, the cantilevered free end of the jaw locking member extending between the pair of jaws to prevent accidental compression of the pair of jaws, and being adapted to be deflected about the fixed end thereof to permit the pair of jaws to be closed.

6. The apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the camming member deflects the jaw locking member as the camming member is advanced distally to close the pair of jaws.

7. The apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the jaw locking member has the cantilevered free end thereof extending between the pair of jaws and the fixed end connected to the housing.

8. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the stop member of the lockout member is supported on a flexible leg and is a projection extending therefrom, and wherein the at least one notch of the camming member is sized and dimensioned to receive the projection to lock the lockout member to the camming member.

9. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the lockout member includes an engagement member which is positioned to releasably retain the lockout member in the first position, the engagement member being biased to a stationary surface in the apparatus.

10. The apparatus according to claim 9 , wherein the clip follower has a lockout nub projecting therefrom; and wherein the lockout nub of the clip follower engages the engagement member of the lockout member to move the lockout member from the first position to the second position.

11. The apparatus according to claim 10 , wherein the lockout nub of the clip follower moves the engagement member of the lockout member after a predetermined clip has been advanced between the pair of jaws.

12. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the clip follower actuates the lockout member when the clip follower advances to one of:

a last clip in the clip stack;

a second to last clip in the clip stack; and

a third to last clip in the clip stack.

13. An apparatus for applying surgical clips comprising:

a body portion housing a clip stack, the body portion including:

a clip pusher slidably supported therein;

a camming member slidably supported therein, wherein the camming member defines at least one notch and at least one aperture therein;

a pawl rotatably mounted in the at least one aperture of the camming member, the pawl configured to retain the camming member in a partially advanced position during actuation of the apparatus;

a clip follower slidably supported therein, wherein the clip follower is positioned proximally of the clip stack;

a clip follower spring disposed proximal to the clip follower and biasing the clip follower distally to engage the clip stack;

a pair of jaws fixedly supported at a distal end of the body portion; and

a jaw locking member having a cantilevered free end and a fixed end connected to the housing, the cantilevered free end of the jaw locking member extending between the pair of jaws to prevent accidental compression of the pair of jaws, and being adapted to be deflected about the fixed end thereof to permit the pair of jaws to be closed.

14. The apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein the camming member deflects the jaw locking member as the camming member is advanced distally to close the pair of jaws.

15. The apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein the jaw locking member has the cantilevered free end thereof extending between the pair of jaws and the fixed end connected to the housing.

16. The apparatus according to claim 13 , further comprising a lockout member having at least one stop member, the lockout member being movable from a first position in slidable relation to the camming member to a second position interlocked with the camming member,

wherein in the second position, the at least one stop member of the lockout member is positioned in the at least one notch of the camming member, the engagement between the at least one stop member and the at least one notch limiting distal movement of the camming member; and

wherein the clip follower actuates the lockout member when the clip follower advances to a predetermined clip in the clip stack.

17. The apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein the stop member of the lockout member is supported on a flexible leg and is a projection extending therefrom, and wherein the at least one notch of the camming member is sized and dimensioned to receive the projection to lock the lockout member to the camming member.

18. The apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein the lockout member includes a pair of opposed flexible legs, and wherein the camming member defines a pair of opposed notches each being configured to receive a respective one of the pair of flexible legs.
