Abstract

A method of coating an article includes the steps of providing a powder comprising coated particles; and spray coating the powder onto a surface of the article to form a composite coating. The spray coating may be carried out by combustion spraying, gas plasma spraying, including vacuum plasma spraying (VPS), and cold spraying. The article may be an implant for surgical or dental use. The powder may include particles of metal coated calcium phosphates, especially metal coated hydroxyapatite. The particles may include bioactive agents.

Claims (26)

1. An article comprising a spray-coated surface produced by a method comprising the steps of:

providing a powder comprising coated particles, each of said coated particles having a particle core and a particle coating coated thereon;

wherein said particle core comprises or consists of a crystalline material selected from calcium phoshate or silica, and wherein the particle coating comprises a metal coating; and

spray coating the powder onto a surface of an article to form a composite coating.

2. The article of claim 1 , wherein the particle coating comprises titanium or a titanium alloy.

3. The article of claim 1 , wherein the particle coating on the coated particles has been formed by a vapour deposition process.

4. The article of claim 1 , wherein the spray coating is performed by a technique selected from the group consisting of combustion spraying, gas plasma spraying, and cold spraying.

5. The article of claim 1 , wherein the particle core comprises silica.

6. The article of claim 1 , wherein the particle core comprises calcium phosphate.

7. The article of claim 6 , wherein the particle core comprises hydroxyapatite.

8. The article of claim 1 , wherein the powder that is spray coated further comprises a bioactive agent.

9. The article of claim 8 , wherein the bioactive agent is incorporated in the coated particles.

10. The article of claim 9 , wherein the bioactive agent is incorporated in the particle core.

11. The article of claim 10 , wherein the bioactive agent is incorporated in the particle core by:

mixing the bioactive agent with core material when forming the cores;

impregnating porous cores with the bioactive agent before coating to form coated particles; or

by impregnating porous cores of coated particles with the bioactive agent, when the particle coating is partial or is porous to the bioactive agent.

12. The article of claim 8 , wherein the bioactive agent is selected from the group consisting of antibiotics, anti-tumour drugs, anti-inflammatory drugs, adhesion factors, and growth factors and morphogens.

13. The article of claim 4 wherein the gas plasma spraying is vacuum plasma spraying.

14. The article of claim 12 wherein the adhesion factor is fibronectin.

15. The article of claim 12 wherein the growth factor is a Bone Morphogenetic Protein.

16. Particles comprising:

a core compromising or consisting of crystalline calcium phosphate,

and a metal coating.

17. The particles according to claim 16 , wherein the core is hydroxyapatite and the coating is titanium or a titanium alloy.

18. An article comprising a spray-coated surface of particles according to claim 16 .
