Abstract

Methods are provided for identifying a disposable flow circuit in a blood processing system. At least a portion of the disposable flow circuit is positioned within a centrifuge that is rotatable about a rotational axis and has a high-G outer wall with a window facing radially away from the rotational axis. The disposable flow circuit is monitored through the window to detect the presence of an expected identification feature and/or an expected alignment feature. If the expected feature is detected, a blood separation procedure is initiated, with the procedure including monitoring the disposable flow circuit through the window to detect characteristics of a fluid within the disposable flow circuit. If the expected feature is not detected, an alarm condition is generated and initiation of the blood separation procedure is prevented.

Claims (26)

1. A method of identifying a disposable flow circuit in a blood processing system, comprising:

positioning at least a portion of the disposable flow circuit in a centrifuge rotatable about a rotational axis and defining a high-G outer wall including a window facing radially away from the rotational axis;

monitoring the disposable flow circuit through the window to detect the presence of an expected identification feature;

initiating a blood separation procedure in which the disposable flow circuit is monitored through the window to detect characteristics of a fluid within the disposable flow circuit if the expected identification feature is detected; and

generating an alarm condition and preventing initiation of the blood separation procedure if the expected identification feature is not detected.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said expected identification feature comprises a barcode.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said expected identification feature comprises a printed image.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said expected identification feature comprises a portion of the disposable flow circuit having a material thickness different from the material thickness of the disposable flow circuit adjacent to said portion.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said expected identification feature comprises a portion of the disposable flow circuit having a material contour different from a material contour of the disposable flow circuit adjacent to said portion.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said expected identification feature comprises a portion of the disposable flow circuit having an opacity different from the opacity of the disposable flow circuit adjacent to said portion.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein

said monitoring the disposable flow circuit comprises monitoring the disposable flow circuit to detect the presence of the expected identification feature and an expected alignment feature,

said generating an alarm condition comprises generating an alarm condition and preventing initiation of the blood separation procedure if the expected identification feature and the expected alignment feature are not both detected, and

said initiating a blood separation procedure comprises initiating a blood separation procedure if the expected identification feature and the expected alignment feature are both detected.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein

the high-G outer wall of the centrifuge includes a ramp, and

said monitoring the disposable flow circuit includes monitoring the disposable flow circuit through the ramp.

9. A method of identifying a disposable flow circuit in a blood processing system, comprising:

positioning at least a portion of the disposable flow circuit in a centrifuge rotatable about a rotational axis and defining a high-G outer wall including a window facing radially away from the rotational axis;

monitoring the disposable flow circuit through the window to detect the presence of an expected alignment feature;

initiating a blood separation procedure in which the disposable flow circuit is monitored through the window to detect characteristics of a fluid within the disposable flow circuit if the expected alignment feature is detected; and

generating an alarm condition and preventing initiation of the blood separation procedure if the expected alignment feature is not detected.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein said expected alignment feature comprises a plurality of markers visible through the window of the centrifuge when the disposable flow circuit is properly aligned within the centrifuge.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein

the high-G outer wall of the centrifuge includes a ramp, and

said monitoring the disposable flow circuit includes monitoring the disposable flow circuit through the ramp.
