Composition for external use on skin for inflammatory diseases
[Problem] Provision of a composition for external use on skin that is safe to use and has an anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic actions. [Solution] A composition for external use on skin in the treatment of inflammatory disease which comprises dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA) as an active ingredient. The DGLA is preferably contained as a glyceride, a phospholipid, or an alkyl ester. The composition for external use contains DGLA in an amount of 0.1-50 wt %.
1. A method of treating inflammatory disease comprising administering topically, to the skin of a patient in need thereof, an effective amount of a pharmaceutical composition consisting of dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA) in the form of a free fatty acid, a pharmaceutical base, and optionally including absorption promoters, moisturizers, thickeners, emulsifying agents, colorants, fragrances, antioxidants, stabilizers, sterilizers, and antiseptics.
2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the composition contains 0.05 to 10 wt % of the dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA).
3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the inflammatory disease is an inflammatory skin disease.
4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the inflammatory disease is atopic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis, psoriasis, rheumatism, or lupus.
5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the composition is applied continuously for at least 7 consecutive days to an area affected by the inflammatory disease.
6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the composition contains 0.05 to 7 wt % of the dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA).
7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the composition contains 0.05 to 10 wt % of the dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA) and wherein the composition is applied continuously for at least 10 consecutive days to an area affected by the inflammatory disease.
8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the composition contains 0.05 to 10 wt % of the dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA) and wherein the composition is applied continuously for at least 14 consecutive days to an area affected by the inflammatory disease.
9. A method of suppressing itch of an inflammatory disease comprising administering topically, to the skin of a patient in need thereof, an effective amount of dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA) in the form of a free fatty acid.

The method according to claim 1 , wherein the pharmaceutical base is selected from the group consisting of white petrolatum, cetanol, stearayl alcohol, stearic acid, white beeswax, liquid paraffin, lauromacrogol, squalene, squalene, lanolin, isobutyl myristate, and middle-chain fatty acid triglyceride.
11. A method for treating inflammatory disease comprising administering topically, to the skin of a patient in need thereof, an effective amount of an ointment consisting of dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA) in the form of a free fatty acid, an ointment base, and optionally including absorption promoters, moisturizers, thickeners, emulsifying agents, colorants, fragrances, antioxidants, stabilizers, sterilizers, and antiseptics.
