Abstract

A composition which includes a salt of metformin and the use of the composition for treatment of or use in prediabetes, diabetes, lowering triglycerides and/or other conditions in mammals.

Claims (8)

1. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a metformin salt of docosahexaenoic acid or a mixture of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, the composition having an aqueous solubility of at least 50 mg/ml under standard conditions.

2. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is prepared by a process comprising the following steps

adding dropwise at room temperature to a concentrated solution of metformin free base in acetonitrile docosahexaenoic acid, or a mixture of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid,

stirring the reaction mixture for one hour at room temperature in a container protected from light,

chilling the reaction mixture to 0 C. for one hour,

filtering the chilled reaction mixture under an atmosphere of nitrogen, and

drying the mixture to a powder.

3. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a metformin salt of docosahexaenoic acid or a mixture of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid.
