Abstract

A light guide apparatus that can redirect light impinging on the apparatus over a wide range of incident angles and can concentrate light without using a tracking system and methods for fabrication.

Claims (20)

1. A light guide apparatus having a core, the core comprising:

a first optically transparent section comprising a first optical medium having a first index of refraction; and

a second optically transparent section comprising a second optical medium having a second index of refraction, an interface between the first optically transparent section and the second optically transparent section defining a shape;

the shape, the first index of refraction and the second index of refraction being configured such that light entering the core in a predetermined angular range is deflected, deflection comprising refraction, at the interface between the first optically transparent section and the second optically transparent section at an angle such that, when light impinges on a core-cladding interface, the light impinges on an interface between the core and a cladding at an angle at least equal to a critical angle for total internal reflection.

2. The light guide apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the shape comprises a first conical frustum of a first half angle; and

wherein a central axis of the first conical frustum substantially coincides with a longitudinal axis of the core.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the first conical frustum comprises a semicircular conical frustum.

4. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the shape further comprises a second conical frustum of a second half angle, a central axis of the second conical frustum substantially coinciding with a longitudinal axis of the core.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the second half angle is greater than the first half angle.

6. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein a bottom base circumference of the first conical frustum coincides with a bottom base circumference of the second conical frustum.

7. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein a top base circumference of the first and second conical frustums substantially coincides with a cross-section of a curvilinear side surface of a central cylinder.

8. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein a bottom base circumference of the first conical frustum substantially coincides with a bottom base circumference of the second conical frustum.

9. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the first half angle ranges from about 0.05 degrees to about 20 degrees, and the second half angle ranges from about 14 degrees to about 26 degrees.

10. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the second frustum comprises a semicircular conical frustum.

11. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the shape comprises a plurality of first conical frustums of the first half angle and a plurality of second conical frustums of the second half angle, wherein central axes of the first and second conical frustums substantially coincide with the longitudinal axis of the core.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein one of the first conical frustums comprises a top base circumference that coincides with a top base circumference of a neighboring one of the second conical frustums.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first index of refraction of the first optical medium ranges from about 1.5 to about 2.2, and the second index of refraction of the second optical medium ranges from about 1.4 to about 2.0.

14. The light guide apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the core further comprises a third optically transparent section comprising a third optical medium, the third optically transparent section interfacing with the second optically transparent section to define a central cylinder.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the third optical medium is air or vacuum.

16. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the second optical medium is same as the third optical medium.
