Abstract

A method to convert carbonaceous materials, particularly biomass and those biomass resources which are remotely located, into a high performance solid fuel. This method, and the apparatus described as the means to accomplish this method, provides a continuous process which can be completely powered by the energy contained in the biomass. The heat, mechanical power and electrical power are provided from the energy in the biomass, through the methods described. In this way, the apparatus is free to operate in remote locations, where no power or auxiliary fuel sources are available.

Claims (44)

1. A method for processing a biomass within an apparatus comprising a heat transfer fluid in a closed-loop heat transfer circuit, said method comprising:

torrefying the biomass utilizing heat by extracting heat from the heat transfer fluid, where said torrefying produces a torrefaction gas and the biofuel;

exothermically reacting said torrefaction gas; and

heating the heat transfer fluid from the reacted torrefaction gas.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising at least partially drying the biomass utilizing heat by extracting heat from the heat transfer fluid, to produce steam, and extracting steam separately from the torrefaction gases.

3. The method of claim 1 , where said heating the heat transfer fluid includes inducing a phase change in the heat transfer fluid.

4. The method of claim 1 , where said method further comprises:

providing heat from the reacted torrefaction gas to a heat engine; and

generating electricity from a heat engine.

5. The method of claim 4 , where said electricity is sufficient to operate said apparatus as a stand-alone apparatus.

6. The method of claim 4 , further comprising

providing heat from the heat transfer fluid to the heat engine.

7. The method of claim 2 , where said drying the biomass produces biomass drying steam, said method further comprising:

providing heat from the biomass drying steam to the heat engine.

8. The method of claim 2 , where said method further comprises:

cooling the torrefied biomass by heating water to form biomass cooling steam; and

providing heat from the biomass cooling steam to the heat engine.

9. The method of claim 4 , where said heat engine is a Rankine cycle engine.

10. The method of claim 1 , where said heat transfer fluid is a mixture of biphenyl (C 12 H 10 ), diphenyl oxide (C 12 H 10 O), poly-phenyls, and halogenated derivatives thereof.

11. The method of claim 8 , where said torrefying, drying, and cooling occurs with the biomass in a non-oxidizing gas, where said non-oxidizing gas is provided from torrefying, drying and/or cooling the biomass.

12. The method of claim 11 , where said cooling includes injecting steam or water into the cooling biomass to provide purge gas to the apparatus.

13. The method of claim 1 , where said exothermically reacting said gas reacts said gas in a catalytic combustor.

14. The method of claim 13 , where a substantial portion of said combustor is in indirect contact with a liquid phase of the heat transfer fluid.

15. The method of claim 1 , further comprising

providing an oxygen depleted gas to the biomass in the heat exchanger, where said oxygen depleted gas is substantially obtained from steam and/or torrefaction gases.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising

exothermally reacting said torrefaction gases; and

heating the heat transfer fluid.

17. The method of claim 2 , where said at least partially drying the biomass includes drying the biomass to a moisture content of 10% to 25%.

18. The method of claim 1 , where said torrefying includes heating the biomass to a temperature of less than 350° C.

19. The method of claim 1 further comprising washing the biomass prior to drying the biomass.

20. The method of claim 1 , further controlling the moisture content of biomass prior to drying by washing the biomass.

21. A method for converting a biomass into a solid biofuel, compatible with existing power plants, said method comprising:

drying the biomass to form steam; and

providing heat from the steam to a heat engine.

22. The method of claim 21 , further comprising

torrefying the biomass utilizing heat by extracting heat from a heat transfer fluid of a closed-loop heat transfer circuit, where said torrefying produces a torrefaction gas and the biofuel;

exothermically reacting said torrefaction gas; and

heating the heat transfer fluid from the reacted torrefaction gas.

23. The method of claim 22 , where said heating the heat transfer fluid includes inducing a phase change in the heat transfer fluid.

24. The method of claim 22 , where said method further comprises:

providing heat from the reacted torrefaction gas to a heat engine; and

generating electricity from a heat engine.

25. The method of claim 24 , where said electricity is sufficient to convert biomass into a solid biofuel, compatible with existing power plants, in a stand-alone apparatus.
