Abstract

The present disclosure relates to systems and methods for dehumidifying air by establishing a humidity gradient across a water selective permeable membrane in a dehumidification unit. Water vapor from relatively humid atmospheric air entering the dehumidification unit is extracted by the dehumidification unit without substantial condensation into a low pressure water vapor chamber operating at a partial pressure of water vapor lower than the partial pressure of water vapor in the relatively humid atmospheric air. For example, water vapor is extracted through a water permeable membrane of the dehumidification unit into the low pressure water vapor chamber. As such, the air exiting the dehumidification unit is less humid than the air entering the dehumidification unit. The low pressure water vapor extracted from the air is subsequently condensed and removed from the system at ambient conditions.

Claims (33)

1. A dehumidification system for removing water vapor from an airstream, comprising:

at least one cooling unit configured to cool air;

a plurality of dehumidification units fluidly coupled to the cooling unit, each dehumidification unit comprising a membrane, wherein the membrane is configured to facilitate removal of water vapor from an airstream flowing through the dehumidification unit;

at least one pressure increasing device configured to create a lower partial pressure of water vapor within the dehumidification unit, such that H 2 O moves through the membrane, wherein the airstream is delivered to the membrane at substantially atmospheric pressure; and

a controller configured to control an operation of the dehumidification system via a psychrometric chart.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of dehumidification units are arranged in series with each other.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of dehumidification units are arranged in parallel with each other.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein a first set of the plurality of dehumidification units is arranged in series with each other, a second set of the plurality of dehumidification units is arranged in series with each other, and the first and second set of the plurality of dehumidification units are arranged in parallel with each other.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one cooling unit comprises a mechanical cooling unit, an evaporative cooling unit, or a combination thereof.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one cooling unit is disposed upstream of the plurality of dehumidification units, downstream of the plurality of dehumidification units, or a combination thereof.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of dehumidification units delivers water vapor to the same pressure increasing device.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of dehumidification units delivers water vapor to a respective pressure increasing device associated therewith.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one pressure increasing device comprises a vacuum pump, and wherein the controller is configured to drive the vacuum pump.

10. A system, comprising:

a dehumidification system for removing H 2 O vapor from an airstream, comprising:

at least one cooling unit configured to cool air;

a plurality of dehumidification units fluidly coupled to the at least one cooling unit, each dehumidification unit comprising an H 2 O permeable barrier, wherein the H 2 O permeable barrier is configured to selectively enable H 2 O to pass through the H 2 O permeable barrier to a suction side of the H 2 O permeable barrier;

at least one pressure increasing device configured to create a lower partial pressure on the suction sides of the H 2 O permeable barriers, wherein the airstream is delivered to the H 2 O permeable barrier at substantially atmospheric pressure; and

a controller configured to control an operation of the dehumidification system via a psychrometric chart.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the dehumidification system comprises at least one condensation device configured to receive H 2 O vapor from an outlet of the at least one pressure increasing device, and to condense the H 2 O vapor into liquid H 2 O.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the dehumidification system comprises at least one device configured to adjust a pressure of the liquid H 2 O from the at least one condensation device to an ambient pressure.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the dehumidification system comprises at least one membrane water vapor rejection device configured to receive the H 2 O vapor from the outlet of the at least one pressure increasing device, and to reject the H 2 O vapor into an ambient air.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of dehumidification units are arranged in series with each other.

15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of dehumidification units are arranged in parallel with each other.

The system of claim 10 , wherein a first set of the plurality of dehumidification units is arranged in series with each other, a second set of the plurality of dehumidification units is arranged in series with each other, and the first and second set of the plurality of dehumidification units are arranged in parallel with each other.

17. The system of claim 10 , wherein the H 2 O permeable barriers comprise zeolite.

18. A method, comprising:

receiving a plurality of airstreams including H 2 O vapor into a plurality of dehumidification units, wherein each airstream includes a respective first partial pressure;

suctioning H 2 O into through H 2 O permeable materials of the plurality of dehumidification units using pressure differentials across the H 2 O permeable materials, wherein the H 2 O vapor channels have a second partial pressure of H 2 O vapor lower than the respective first partial pressure of H 2 O vapor of the airstreams, and wherein each airstream is delivered to the H 2 O permeable materials of respective plurality of dehumidification units at substantially atmospheric pressure;

receiving H 2 O vapor into a pressure increasing device and increasing the pressure of the H 2 O vapor from the pressure increasing device to a third partial pressure of H 2 O vapor that is higher than the second partial pressure of H 2 O vapor;
