Abstract

The production of gasses and, more particularly, to systems and methods for the production of syngas and fuel gasses including the production of hydrogen are set forth. In one embodiment system and method includes a reactor having a molten pool of a material comprising sodium carbonate. A supply of conditioned water is in communication with the reactor. A supply of carbon containing material is also in communication with the reactor. In one particular embodiment, the carbon containing material may include vacuum residuum (VR). The water and VR may be kept at desired temperatures and pressures compatible with the process that is to take place in the reactor. When introduced into the reactor, the water, the VR and the molten pool may be homogenously mixed in an environment in which chemical reactions take place including the production of hydrogen and other gasses.

Claims (15)

1. A system for producing gas, the system comprising:

a reactor having a molten pool containing sodium carbonate;

a supply of softened water in communication with the reactor;

a supply of vacuum residuum in communication with the reactor; and

a control system associated with the supply of vacuum residuum to maintain the vacuum residuum at a desired temperature, a desired pressure and a desired flow rate.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a control system associated with the water supply to maintain the water supply at a desired temperature, a desired pressure and a desired flow rate.

The system of claim 1 , further comprising a first flow path between the supply of softened water and the reactor and a second flow path between the supply of vacuum residuum and the reactor, wherein the first flow path and the second flow path accommodate mixing of water provided by the water supply and vacuum residuum provided by the vacuum residuum supply prior to the water and the vacuum residuum entering into the molten pool of the reactor.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a separation system configured to separate gasses, liquids and solids produced as an output by the reactor.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the separation system is configured to produce output gas streams of hydrogen, methane and carbon dioxide.

6. The system of claim 4 , wherein the separation system is configured to extract water from the output of the reactor and recycle the extracted water back to the water supply.

7. The system of claim 4 , wherein the separation system is configured to dissolve any soluble solids of the output of the reactor and recycle the dissolved solids to the molten pool.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the reactor is configured to maintain a substantially homogenous mixture of the molten pool and any softened water and vacuum residuum added to the molten pool to effect the chemical reaction set forth in the following equilibrium equation:

Na 2 CO 3 +2C+4H 2 O← →Na 2 CO 3 +2CO 2 +4H 2 .

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the molten pool and any softened water and vacuum residuum added thereto are maintained at a temperature of approximately 930° C.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the molten pool and any softened water and vacuum residuum added thereto are maintained at a pressure of approximately 13.9 MPa.
