Abstract

The present invention is directed to a remotely controlled welding machine. A remote control uses the welding circuit to transfer information to a welding power source. The information to be communicated to the power source includes welding power source output command information (amperage/voltage control), welding circuit on/off information (power source output contactor control), and power source mode control (constant voltage/constant current). A transmitter transmits the desired welding operational parameters to a receiver disposed in the power source. The transmitter is constructed to use only a small amount of power which, preferably, is supplied by one or two low voltage replaceable and/or rechargeable batteries. Additionally, an open circuit voltage is not created between the power source and an electrode holder when an arc is not present.

Claims (15)

1. A welding retrofit kit comprising:

a transmitter module configured to be disposed within a first welding device, wherein the transmitter module is configured to transmit a signal indicative of a desired welding operation based on a selected power source mode, wherein the signal is transmitted at a first voltage level for a first power source mode and at a second voltage level for a second power source mode;

a receiver module configured to be disposed within a second welding device, wherein the receiver module is configured to receive the signal indicative of the desired welding operation; and

a comparator circuit configured to determine the selected power source mode based on the voltage level.

2. The welding retrofit kit of claim 1 , wherein the first welding device is a wire feeder and the second welding device is a power source.

3. The welding retrofit kit of claim 2 , wherein the power source comprises a controller configured to regulate the power source according to the desired welding operation.

4. The welding retrofit kit of claim 1 , wherein the receiver module is configured to receive the signal indicative of the desired welding operation via a weld cable connecting the first welding device and the second welding device.

5. The welding retrofit kit of claim 1 , wherein the desired welding operation includes a magnitude of power source output.

6. The welding retrofit kit of claim 1 , wherein the transmitter module is configured to produce a substantially rectangular voltage pulse of variable width.

7. The welding retrofit kit of claim 6 , wherein the transmitter module is configured to transmit the signal within a range of approximately 1.3 Hz to 100 Hz.

8. The welding retrofit kit of claim 1 , wherein the transmitter module is configured to be disposed entirely within the first welding device, and the receiver module is configured to be disposed entirely within the second welding device.

9. The welding retrofit kit of claim 1 , wherein the first power source mode corresponds to a constant current mode, and the second voltage level corresponds to a constant voltage mode.

10. The welding retrofit kit of claim 1 , further comprising a selector to select the power source mode, the selector configured to select between a first power source to provide a first output for the first voltage level and a second power source to provide a second output for the second voltage level.

11. The welding retrofit kit of claim 10 , wherein the first power source comprises a first battery and the second power source comprises the first battery and a second battery connected in series.

12. The welding retrofit kit of claim 1 , wherein the comparator is configured to compare the signal to a reference voltage and determine the selected power source mode based on the comparison.
