Abstract

Computer-based methods and systems are provided for improved recognition and presentation of parts, such as machine parts, as well as methods and systems for modeling and predicting the cost of such parts.

Claims (63)

1 . A computer-based automatic cost estimation system for automatically estimating a manufacturing cost of a physical component, the system comprising:

i. a geometry assessment module, using a microprocessor, adapted to:

identify a representation of a starting configuration of a component and a desired final configuration of the component;

identify differences between the starting configuration of the component and the desired final configuration of the component;

determine a plurality of transformation steps to transform the component to the desired final configuration of the component;

ii. a process routing engine, using a microprocessor, adapted to:

determine at least one process for executing each of the plurality of transformation steps; and

identify manufacturing equipment for carrying out the determined at least one process for each of the transformation steps;

iii. a model of equipment capabilities for a plurality of pieces of manufacturing equipment, the model stored in a non-transitory medium;

iv. a physics based mechanistic module operating on a microprocessor and adapted to estimate a time required on each piece of equipment for the at least one process for each transformation step identified by the transformation analysis module using the model of equipment capabilities;

v. a cost model for each piece of manufacturing equipment, the cost model stored in a non-transitory medium; and

vi. a transformation cost estimation module, using a microprocessor, adapted to:

estimate a cost given the time required for using each piece of manufacturing equipment for each transformation step using the cost model for each piece of manufacturing equipment;

estimate a cost of tooling required for each piece of manufacturing equipment for each step for which tooling is required;

aggregate a total cost for the at least one process for all the determined transformation steps; and

estimate a total cost for manufacturing a specified quantity of the desired final configuration of the component.

The computer-based automatic cost estimation system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one process determined comprises a plurality of processes for transforming the component to the desired final configuration and wherein the step for aggregating the total cost is performed for each of the plurality of processes and wherein the step of estimating the total cost is performed for each of the plurality of processes.

The computer-based automatic cost estimation system of claim 1 , wherein the transformation cost estimation module is further adapted to provide a user with a per piece cost estimate for manufacturing the specified quantity of the desired final configuration of the component from the component, the specified quantity selected from the group consisting of a batch and an annual volume.

The computer-based automatic cost estimation system of claim 1 , wherein the component is a beginning configuration of a procured part selected from the group consisting of a plastic sheetstock, a plastic barstock, a sheetstock, a barstock, a casting, a forging, a partially completed final component, a subassembly and a blank.

5 . The computer-based automatic cost estimation system of claim 1 , wherein the estimated time required on each piece of equipment includes a separate estimated time for set up and tear down.

The computer-based automatic cost estimation system of claim 1 , wherein the cost model for each piece of equipment comprises at least one cost selected from the group consisting of labor costs, overhead costs, real estate costs, computer processing costs, parts costs, allocation of overhead costs, raw material costs, capital costs, rental cost, leasing costs, and energy costs.

7 . The computer-based automatic cost estimation system of claim 1 wherein the model of the equipment capabilities comprises at least one capability selected from the group consisting of equipment speed, operator labor required, equipment setup time, and equipment range of motion.

8 . A computer-based automatic cost estimation system for automatically estimating a manufacturing cost of a physical component, the system comprising:

i. a geometry assessment module using a microprocessor adapted to:

identify a first configuration for a component represented by a first data structure within a 3-D CAD model and a final configuration of the component represented by a second data structure within a 3-D CAD model;

identify differences between the first configuration and the final configuration;

determine transformation steps to transform the component to the final configuration of the component;

ii. a process routing engine, using a microprocessor, adapted to:

determine at least one process for each of the transformation steps; and

identify manufacturing equipment for carrying out the determined at least one process for each of the transformation steps;

iii. a model of equipment capabilities for a plurality of pieces of manufacturing equipment, the model stored in a non-transitory medium;

iv. a cost model for each piece of manufacturing equipment, the cost model stored in a non-transitory medium; and

v. a transformation cost estimation module, using a microprocessor, adapted to:

estimate a time required on each piece of equipment for the at least one process for each transformation step using the model of equipment capabilities for each piece of manufacturing equipment;

estimate a cost given the time required for using each piece of manufacturing equipment for each transformation step using the cost model for each piece of manufacturing equipment;

estimate a cost of tooling required for each piece of manufacturing equipment for each step for which tooling is required;

aggregate a total cost for the at least one process for all the determined transformation steps; and

estimate a total cost for manufacturing a specified quantity of the final configuration of the component.

The computer-based automatic cost estimation system of claim 8 , wherein the at least one process determined by the process routing engine comprises a plurality of processes for transforming the component to the final configuration and wherein the step for aggregating the total cost is performed for each of the plurality of processes and wherein the step of estimating the total cost is performed for each of the plurality of processes.

The computer-based automatic cost estimation system of claim 8 , wherein the microprocessor is further adapted to identify an intermediate stage for the component, the intermediate stage characterized in a third data structure in a 3-D CAD model, and determine steps to transform the first 3-D CAD model to the third 3-D CAD model via at least one manufacturing process.

11 . The computer-based automatic cost estimation system of claim 8 , wherein at least one step in the at least one process is a molding step, and wherein estimating the cost of tooling comprises a step of determining a draw direction for the tool.

12 . The computer-based automatic cost estimation system of claim 8 , wherein the model of the equipment capabilities comprises at least one capability selected from the group consisting of equipment speed, operator labor required, equipment setup time, and equipment range of motion.

13 . The computer-based automatic cost estimation system of claim 8 , wherein the first 3-D CAD model is a solid block of material in a shape selected from the group consisting of a square, a cuboid, a cylinder and a hollow cylinder.

The computer-based automatic cost estimation system of claim 8 , wherein the microprocessor is further adapted to store information useful for the estimating the manufacturing cost, the information selected from the group consisting of: available equipment, manufacturing costs, material costs, labor costs, overhead costs and energy costs.

15 . A computer-based automatic cost estimation system for automatically estimating a manufacturing cost of a physical component, the system comprising:

i. a geometry assessment module using a microprocessor adapted to:

identify a representation of a starting configuration of a component and a desired final configuration of the component;

identify differences between the starting configuration of the component and the desired final configuration of the component;

determine transformation steps to transform the component to the desired final configuration of the component;

determine at least one process for each of the transformation steps; and

identify manufacturing equipment for carrying out the determined at least one process for each of the transformation steps;

ii. a model of equipment capabilities for a plurality of pieces of manufacturing equipment, the model stored in a non-transitory medium;

iii. a cost model for each piece of manufacturing equipment, the cost model stored in a non-transitory medium; and

iv. a transformation cost estimation module, using a microprocessor, adapted to:

estimate a time required on each piece of equipment for the at least one process for each transformation step using the model of equipment capabilities for each piece of manufacturing equipment;

estimate a cost given the time required for using each piece of manufacturing equipment for each transformation step using the cost model for each piece of manufacturing equipment;

aggregate a total cost for the at least one process for all the determined transformation steps; and

estimate a total cost for manufacturing a specified quantity of the desired final configuration of the component.

16 . The computer-based automatic cost estimation system of claim 15 , wherein the microprocessor is further adapted to estimate a cost of tooling required for each piece of manufacturing equipment for each step for which tooling is required.

17 . The computer-based automatic cost estimation system of claim 16 , wherein estimating the cost of tooling comprises a step of determining a draw direction for the tool.

The computer-based automatic cost estimation system of claim 15 , wherein the at least one process comprises a plurality of processes for transforming the component to the desired final configuration and wherein the step for aggregating the total cost is performed for each of the plurality of processes and wherein the step of estimating the total cost is performed for each of the plurality of processes.

19 . The computer-based automatic cost estimation system of claim 15 , wherein the at least one process for at least one transformation step is creating a hole.

20 . The computer-based automatic cost estimation system of claim 19 , wherein a computer program for estimating the total cost includes at least one routine for estimating a cost of creating the hole, the at least one routine selected from the group consisting of drilling, milling, laser cutting and punching.
