Abstract

A technique includes towing at least one seismic source in connection with a survey of a structure; and operating the seismic source(s) to fire shots, where each shot is associated with a frequency sweep. The technique includes varying phases of the frequency sweeps from shot to shot according to a predetermined phase sequence to allow noise in an energy sensed by seismic sensors to be attenuated.

Claims (30)

1. A method comprising:

towing a plurality of seismic sources in connection with a survey of a geologic structure;

operating the plurality of seismic sources to fire respective shots at substantially the same time, wherein each shot is associated with a frequency sweep; and

varying phases of the frequency sweeps among the plurality of seismic sources from shot to shot according to a predetermined phase sequence such that shots fired by respective seismic sources at substantially the same time are associated with frequency sweeps having different phases to allow noise in an energy sensed by seismic sensors to be source separated.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein varying the phases comprises, for each seismic source of the plurality of seismic sources, varying phases of the frequency sweeps of the shots fired by the seismic source from shot to shot.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein varying the phases comprises varying the phases to allow the energy to be separated up to a predefined frequency threshold.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

varying the phases comprises varying the phases to allow residual shot noise associated with a given seismic source of the plurality of seismic sources to be attenuated.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein varying the phases comprises varying the phases based at least in part on a predetermined residual shot noise shift per shot.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein varying the phases comprises varying the phases according to a function Ø(n)=2·Ø(n−1)−Ø(n−2)−θ, where Ø(n) represents a phase of shot n and θ is a fixed phase shift.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein θ is near or at 180 degrees.

8. The method of claim 4 , wherein varying the phases comprises regulating the frequency sweeps such that the frequency sweeps alternate between a sine and a cosine of a given phase function.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein varying the phases comprises varying the phases according to a repeating pattern.

10. A method comprising:

receiving data acquired by sensors, the data representing energy sensed by the sensors resulting from source energy from a plurality of one seismic sources interacting with a structure, wherein the plurality of seismic sources are operated to fire shots, the plurality of seismic sources fire respective shots at substantially the same time, each shot is associated with a frequency sweep, and phases of the frequency sweeps varying among the plurality of seismic sources from shot to shot according to a predetermined phase sequence such that shots fired by respective seismic sources at substantially the same time have different phases; and

processing information derived from the data by a processor-based machine in an application to source separate the energy sensed by the sensors.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

performing frequency-wavenumber filtering of the data to generate the information derived from the data.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the processing comprises:

performing deghosting or constructing an image based on the data.

13. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

processing the information in an application that relies on attenuation of residual shot noise.

14. An apparatus comprising:

an interface to receive data acquired by sensors, the data representing energy sensed by the sensors resulting from source energy from a plurality of seismic sources interacting with a structure, wherein the plurality of seismic sources are operated to fire shots, the plurality of seismic sources fire respective shots at substantially the same time, each shot being associated with a frequency sweep, and phases of the frequency sweeps varying among the plurality of seismic sources from shot to shot according to a predetermined phase sequence such that shots fired by respective seismic sources at substantially the same time are associated with different phases; and

a processor to process information derived from the data by a processor-based machine in an application to source separate the energy sensed by the sensors.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein:

the processor is adapted to process the information in an application that relies on attenuation of residual shot noise.

16. An article comprising a non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing instructions that when executed by a computer cause the computer to:

receive data acquired by sensors, the data representing energy sensed by the sensors resulting from source energy from a plurality of seismic sources interacting with a structure, wherein the plurality of seismic sources are operated to fire shots, the plurality of seismic sources fire respective shots at substantially the same time, each shot being associated with a frequency sweep, and phases of the frequency sweeps varying among the plurality of seismic sources from shot to shot according to a predetermined phase sequence such that shots fired by respective seismic sources at substantially the same time are associated with different phases; and

process information derived from the data in an application to source separate the energy sensed by the sensors.
