Abstract

A patient support system includes independently adjustable columns supporting a hinged bending or breaking patient support structure. At least one column includes at least two sections. A coordinated drive system provides for upwardly breaking and downwardly breaking orientations of the two sections in various inclined and tilted positions.

Claims (70)

1. A surgical table comprising:

a patient support comprising a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and a joint intermediate the first and second ends and about which the first and second ends articulate relative to each other;

a first vertical support supporting a first displacement apparatus operably coupling the first vertical support to the first end, of the patient support, the first displacement apparatus configured to allow: i) the first end to pivot relative to the first vertical support about a first axis when the patient support pivots about a lengthwise dimension of the patient support; and ii) the first end to displace relative to the first vertical support along the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint; and

a second vertical support supporting a second displacement apparatus operably coupling the second vertical support to the second end of the patient support, the second displacement apparatus configured to allow: i) the second end to pivot relative to the second vertical support about a second axis when the patient support pivots about the lengthwise dimension of the patient support; and ii) the second end to displace relative to the second vertical support along the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

The surgical table as in any of claim 1 , in which the first displacement apparatus is further configured to allow the first end to pivot relative to the first vertical support about a third axis transverse to the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

The surgical table of claim 2 , wherein the second displacement apparatus is further configured to allow the second end to pivot relative to the second vertical support about a fourth axis transverse to the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

4. The surgical table of claim 3 , wherein the first and third axes are transverse to each other and the second and fourth axes are transverse to each other.

The surgical table as in any of claim 1 , in which the first displacement apparatus comprises a first rotation subassembly operably coupled between the first end and the first vertical support, the first rotation subassembly comprising a first shaft coaxial with the first axis, the first shaft making it possible for the first end to pivot relative to the first vertical support about the first axis when the patient support pivots about the lengthwise dimension of the patient support.

6. The surgical table of claim 5 , wherein the first shaft extends directly from the first vertical support.

7. The surgical table of claim 5 , wherein the first displacement apparatus further comprises a first angulation subassembly operably coupled between the first end and the first vertical support, wherein the first angulation subassembly makes it possible for the first end to displace relative to the first vertical support along the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

8. The surgical table of claim 7 , wherein the first angulation subassembly is operably coupled between the first end and the first rotation subassembly.

The surgical table of claim 7 , wherein the first angulation subassembly further makes it possible for the first end to pivot relative to the first vertical support about a third axis transverse to the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

10. The surgical table of claim 9 , wherein the first angulation subassembly further comprises a first pivot coaxial with the third axis and about which the first end pivots relative to the first vertical support when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

The surgical table of claim 10 , wherein the first angulation subassembly further comprises a first mechanical arrangement that acts with the first pivot to make possible the first end displacing relative to the first vertical support along the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

The surgical table of claim 11 , wherein the first pivot comprises a pivot pin and the first mechanical arrangement comprises an elongated slot in which the pivot pin is received, the elongated slot displacing along the pivot pin as the first end displaces relative to the first vertical support along the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

The surgical table of claim 11 , wherein the second displacement apparatus comprises a second rotation subassembly operably coupled between the second end and the second vertical support, the second rotation subassembly comprising a second shaft coaxial with the second axis, the second shaft making it possible for the second end to pivot relative to the second vertical support about the second axis when the patient support pivots about the lengthwise dimension of the patient support.

14. The surgical table of claim 13 , wherein the first shaft and second shaft are actively driven.

15. The surgical table of claim 14 , wherein the first shaft extends from a first motor and the second shaft extends from a second motor.

The surgical table of claim 13 , wherein the second displacement apparatus further comprises a second angulation subassembly operably coupled between the second end and the second vertical support, wherein the second angulation subassembly makes it possible for the second end to displace relative to the second vertical support along the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

17. The surgical table of claim 16 , wherein the first angulation subassembly and second angulation subassembly are passively driven.

18. The surgical table of claim 17 , further comprising a drive system that acts across the joint to actively drive the joint and passively drive the first angulation subassembly and second angulation subassembly.

19. The surgical table of claim 18 , wherein the drive system comprises a cable system, a screw drive, or a hydraulic system.

20. The surgical table of claim 16 , wherein the first angulation subassembly is pivotally coupled to the first vertical support via the first rotation subassembly, and the second angulation subassembly is pivotally coupled to the second vertical support via the second rotation subassembly.

21. The surgical table of claim 16 , wherein the second angulation subassembly is operably coupled between the second end and the second rotation subassembly.

22. The surgical table of claim 16 , wherein the second angulation subassembly further makes it possible for the second end to pivot relative to the second vertical support about a fourth axis transverse to the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

23. The surgical table of claim 22 , wherein the second angulation subassembly further comprises a second pivot coaxial with the fourth axis and about which the second end pivots relative to the second vertical support when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

24. The surgical table of claim 23 , wherein the second angulation subassembly further comprises a second mechanical arrangement that acts with the second pivot to make possible the second end displacing relative to the second vertical support along the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

25. The surgical table of claim 24 , wherein the second pivot comprises a pivot pin and the second mechanical arrangement comprises an elongated slot in which the pivot pin is received, the elongated slot displacing along the pivot pin as the second end displaces relative to the second vertical support along the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

26. The surgical table of claim 7 , wherein the first angulation subassembly is passively driven.

27. The surgical table of claim 26 , further comprising a drive system that acts across the joint to actively drive the joint and passively drive the first angulation subassembly.

28. The surgical table of claim 27 , wherein the drive system comprises a cable system, a screw drive, or a hydraulic system.

29. The surgical table of claim 5 , wherein the first shaft is actively driven.

30. The surgical table of claim 29 , wherein the first shaft extends from a motor.

31. A surgical table comprising:

a patient support comprising a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and a joint intermediate the first and second ends and about which the first and second ends articulate relative to each other;

a first vertical support supporting a first displacement apparatus operably coupling the first vertical support to the first end of the patient support, the first displacement apparatus configured such that: i) the first end pivots relative to the first vertical support about a first axis as the patient support pivots about a lengthwise dimension of the patient support; and ii) the first end displaces relative to the first vertical support along the lengthwise dimension as the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint; and

a second vertical support supporting a second displacement apparatus operably coupling the second vertical support to the second end of the patient support, the second displacement apparatus configured such that: i) the second end pivots relative to the second vertical support about a second axis as the patient support pivots about the lengthwise dimension of the patient support; and ii) the second end displaces relative to the second vertical support along the lengthwise dimension as the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

32. A surgical table comprising:

a patient support comprising a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and a joint intermediate the first and second ends and about which the first and second ends articulate relative to each other;

a first vertical support supporting the first end of the patient support such that: i) the first end pivots relative to the first vertical support about a first axis as the patient support pivots about a lengthwise dimension of the patient support; and ii) the first end displaces relative to the first vertical support along the lengthwise dimension as the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint; and

a second vertical support supporting the second end of the patient support such that: i) the second end pivots relative to the second vertical support about a second axis as the patient support pivots about the lengthwise dimension of the patient support; and ii) the second end displaces relative to the second vertical support along the lengthwise dimension as the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

33. The surgical table of claim 32 , wherein the first vertical support further supports the first end such that the first end pivots relative to the first vertical support about a third axis transverse to the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

34. The surgical table of claim 33 , wherein the second vertical support further supports the second end such that the second end pivots relative to the second vertical support about a fourth axis transverse to the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

35. The surgical table of claim 34 , wherein the first and third axes are transverse to each other and the second and fourth axes are transverse to each other.

36. The surgical table of claim 32 , wherein a first rotation subassembly is operably coupled between the first end and the first vertical support, the first rotation subassembly comprising a first shaft coaxial with the first axis, the first shaft being at least partially responsible for the first end being able to pivot relative to the first vertical support about the first axis when the patient support pivots about the lengthwise dimension of the patient support.

37. The surgical table of claim 36 , wherein the first shaft is actively driven.

38. The surgical table of claim 37 , wherein the first shaft extends from a motor.

39. The surgical table of claim 36 , wherein the first shaft extends directly from the first vertical support.

40. The surgical table of claim 36 , wherein a first angulation subassembly is operably coupled between the first end and the first vertical support such that the first end displaces relative to the first vertical support along the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

41. The surgical table of claim 40 , wherein the first angulation subassembly is passively driven.

42. The surgical table of claim 41 , further comprising a drive system that acts across the joint to actively drive the joint and passively drive the first angulation subassembly.

43. The surgical table of claim 42 , wherein the drive system comprises a cable system, a screw drive, or a hydraulic system.

44. The surgical table of claim 42 , wherein the first angulation subassembly further comprises a first pivot coaxial with the third axis and about which the first end pivots relative to the first vertical support when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

45. The surgical table of claim 44 , wherein the first angulation subassembly further comprises a first mechanical arrangement that acts with the first pivot such that the first end displaces relative to the first vertical support along the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

46. The surgical table of claim 45 , wherein the first pivot comprises a pivot pin and the first mechanical arrangement comprises an elongated slot in which the pivot pin is received, the elongated slot displacing along the pivot pin as the first end displaces relative to the first vertical support along the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

47. The surgical table of claim 45 , wherein a second rotation subassembly is operably coupled between the second end and the second vertical support, the second rotation subassembly comprising a second shaft coaxial with the second axis, the second shaft being at least partially responsible for the second end being able to pivot relative to the second vertical support about the second axis when the patient support pivots about the lengthwise dimension of the patient support.

48. The surgical table of claim 47 , wherein the first shaft and second shaft are actively driven.

49. The surgical table of claim 48 , wherein the first shaft extends from a first motor and the second shaft extends from a second motor.

50. The surgical table of claim 47 , wherein a second angulation subassembly is operably coupled between the second end and the second vertical support such that the second end displaces relative to the second vertical support along the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

51. The surgical table of claim 50 , wherein the first angulation subassembly and second angulation subassembly are passively driven.

52. The surgical table of claim 51 , further comprising a drive system that acts across the joint to actively drive the joint and passively drive the first angulation subassembly and second angulation subassembly.

53. The surgical table of claim 52 , wherein the drive system comprises a cable system, a screw drive, or a hydraulic system.

54. The surgical table of claim 53 , wherein the first angulation subassembly is pivotally coupled to the first vertical support via the first rotation subassembly, and the second angulation subassembly is pivotally coupled to the second vertical support via the second rotation subassembly.

55. The surgical table of claim 50 , wherein the second angulation subassembly is operably coupled between the second end and the second rotation subassembly.

56. The surgical table of claim 50 , wherein the second angulation subassembly is operably coupled between the second end and the second vertical support such that the second end pivots relative to the second vertical support about a fourth axis transverse to the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

57. The surgical table of claim 56 , wherein the second angulation subassembly further comprises a second pivot coaxial with the fourth axis and about which the second end pivots relative to the second vertical support when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

58. The surgical table of claim 57 , wherein the second angulation subassembly further comprises a second mechanical arrangement that acts with the second pivot such that the second end displaces relative to the second vertical support along the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

59. The surgical table of claim 58 , wherein the second pivot comprises a pivot pin and the second mechanical arrangement comprises an elongated slot in which the pivot pin is received, the elongated slot displacing along the pivot pin as the second end displaces relative to the second vertical support along the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.

60. The surgical table of claim 40 , wherein the first angulation subassembly is operably coupled between the first end and the first rotation subassembly.

61. The surgical table of claim 40 , wherein the first angulation subassembly is operably coupled between the first end and the first vertical support such that the first end pivots relative to the first vertical support about a third axis transverse to the lengthwise dimension when the first and second ends articulate relative to each other about the joint.
