Abstract

An apparatus for mixing tank contents including sedimentary material is disclosed. The apparatus includes an agitator connected to a support including a plurality of detachable sections. The apparatus further includes a frame adjacent an opening in a top of the tank. The apparatus also includes an actuatable connector for interconnecting the frame to the support. The connector is configured to be actuated in order to lift a first portion of the support above the frame while a second portion of the support below the frame is maintained, to thereby cause a gap between the first portion and the second portion enabling at least one of the detachable sections to be inserted into the gap. The apparatus also includes at least one actuator for causing the connector to lift the first portion in order to cause the gap, and for lowering the first portion and the second portion.

Claims (54)

1. A method for removing substance including solid constituents from a refinery tank, the method comprising:

inserting a mixing apparatus into an opening at a top of a refinery tank, wherein the mixing apparatus includes an agitator connected to an elongated and rigid agitator support;

securing the agitator support to a connector located at a periphery of the opening in order to secure the agitator at a first depth in the refinery tank;

mixing the substance in the refinery tank with the agitator;

pumping the mixed substance from the refinery tank through the agitator support;

suspending the mixing and pumping;

un-securing the agitator support from the connector;

lowering the agitator to a second depth deeper than the first depth;

re-securing the agitator support to the connector; and

resuming the pumping and mixing with the agitator at the second depth,

wherein the agitator support includes a plurality of sections, and wherein lowering includes detaching adjacent sections from each other, forming a gap between the adjacent sections, and securing an additional section in the gap.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising iteratively mixing, pumping, un-securing, lowering, re-securing, and resuming a plurality of times.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein lowering includes energizing an actuator connected to the agitator support.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising conveying the substance into a tanker trailer.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising securing the connector to a frame extending at least partially about the opening prior to mixing the substance in the refinery tank.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising simultaneously mixing the substance in the refinery tank and pumping the mixed substance from the refinery tank.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising independently mixing the substance in the refinery tank and pumping the mixed substance from the refinery tank.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising pumping the mixed substance into a distal opening in the agitator support.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising withdrawing the mixed substance through a flexible tube in fluid communication with the distal opening.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising operating at least two pumps to withdraw the mixed substance through the agitator support and the flexible tube.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the agitator support includes a first portion and a second portion, and wherein lowering includes:

securing the second portion relative to a frame extending at least partially about the opening;

lifting the first portion relative to the second portion; and

inserting an elongating structure between the first portion and the second portion.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising raising the agitator support to the first depth from the second depth.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the agitator support includes a plurality of sections, and wherein raising includes removing at least one of the plurality of sections from the agitator support.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein removing includes detaching at least one section from adjacent sections of the agitator support, forming a gap between the adjacent section, and securing the adjacent sections to each other to close the gap.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the agitator is a mono-spin mixer.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mixing apparatus includes a pump connected to the agitator support proximate the agitator, and wherein suspending includes suspending the mixing and pumping when a level of substance in the tank drops below the pump.

17. The method of claim 1 , further comprising prior to mixing the substance, diluting the substance in the refinery tank.

18. A method for removing substance including solid constituents from a refinery tank, the method comprising:

inserting a mixing apparatus into an opening at a top of a refinery tank, wherein the mixing apparatus includes an agitator connected to an elongated and rigid agitator support;

securing the agitator support to a connector located at a periphery of the opening in order to secure the agitator at a first depth in the refinery tank;

mixing the substance in the refinery tank with the agitator;

pumping the mixed substance from the refinery tank into a distal opening in the agitator support;

withdrawing the mixed substance through a flexible tube in fluid communication with the distal opening;

operating at least two pumps to withdraw the mixed substance through the agitator support and the flexible tube;

suspending the mixing and pumping;

un-securing the agitator support from the connector;

lowering the agitator to a second depth deeper than the first depth;

re-securing the agitator support to the connector; and

resuming the pumping and mixing with the agitator at the second depth.

19. A method for removing substance including solid constituents from a refinery tank, the method comprising:

inserting a mixing apparatus into an opening at a top of a refinery tank, wherein the mixing apparatus includes an agitator connected to an elongated and rigid agitator support;

securing the agitator support to a connector located at a periphery of the opening in order to secure the agitator at a first depth in the refinery tank;

mixing the substance in the refinery tank with the agitator;

pumping the mixed substance from the refinery tank through the agitator support;

suspending the mixing and pumping;

un-securing the agitator support from the connector;

lowering the agitator to a second depth deeper than the first depth;

re-securing the agitator support to the connector;

resuming the pumping and mixing with the agitator at the second depth; and

raising the agitator support to the first depth from the second depth,

wherein the agitator support includes a plurality of sections, and wherein raising includes removing at least one of the plurality of sections from the agitator support.
