Abstract

A method for measuring an angular position of a rotating shaft, the method including providing a magnetic field which rotates with the shaft about an axis of rotation, positioning an integrated circuit having first and second magnetic sensing bridges within the magnetic field at a radially off-center position from the axis of rotation, the first and second magnetic sensing bridges respectively providing first and second signals representative of first and second magnetic field directions, the integrated circuit having a set of adjustment parameters for modifying attributes of the first and second signals, modifying values of the set of adjustment parameters until errors in the first and second signals are substantially minimized, and determining an angular position of the shaft based on the first and second signals.

Claims (15)

1. An integrated circuit for measuring an angular position of a magnetic object rotating around an axis from an off-axis position, the integrated circuit comprising:

a plurality of magnetic sensing elements; and

a plurality of switches configured to select a subset of one or more sensing elements out of the plurality of magnetic sensing elements, the subset of sensing elements providing a first signal representative of a first directional component of a magnetic field caused by the rotating magnetic object, each of the switches of the plurality of switches being disposed outside of connection paths between any sensing elements of the selected subset of sensing elements.

2. The integrated circuit according to claim 1 , wherein the subset of magnetic sensing elements further provides a second signal representative of a second directional component of the magnetic field caused by the rotating magnetic object.

3. The integrated circuit according to claim 2 , wherein the subset of sensing elements is configured to form a first sensing bridge providing the first and second signal when selected by the plurality of switches.

4. The integrated circuit according to claim 3 , wherein switching at least a selected one out of the plurality of switches causes a switching from the subset of sensing elements to another subset of sensing elements out of the plurality magnetic sensing elements, the another subset of sensing elements providing a third signal representative of a third directional component of the magnetic field caused by the rotating magnetic object.

5. The integrated circuit according to claim 4 , wherein the third directional component is substantially parallel to the first directional component or the second directional component of the magnetic field caused by the rotating magnetic object.

6. The integrated circuit according to claim 4 , wherein the subset of sensing elements and the another subset of sensing elements share a common ground plane.

7. The integrated circuit according to claim 4 , wherein the another subset of magnetic sensing elements provides a fourth signal representative of a further directional component of the magnetic field caused by the rotating magnetic object, the further directional component being substantially perpendicular to the third directional component of the magnetic field caused by the rotating magnetic object.

8. The integrated circuit according to claim 7 , wherein the another subset of sensing elements is configured to form a second sensing bridge providing the third and fourth signal when selected by the plurality of switches.

9. The integrated circuit according to claim 8 , wherein the first sensing bridge and the second sensing bridge are arranged at least partially overlapping.

10. The integrated circuit according to claim 2 , wherein the second directional component of the magnetic field is substantially orthogonal to the first directional component of the magnetic field.

11. The integrated circuit according to claim 1 , wherein individual ones of the plurality of magnetic sensing elements are selected from the group consisting of GMR sensing elements, TMR sensing elements, and AMR sensing elements, horizontal Hall sensing elements, and vertical Hall sensing elements.

12. The integrated circuit according to claim 1 , wherein individual ones of the subset of sensing elements share a common ground plate.

13. The integrated circuit according to claim 1 , further comprising a voltage controlled current source coupled to a feedback loop, wherein the voltage controlled current source is configured to control a voltage across the subset of sensing elements.
