Abstract

Disclosed herein is a device for continuous physiological monitoring as well as systems and methods for interpreting data from such a device. The systems and methods may include automatically detecting, assessing, and analyzing exercise activity, physical recovery states, sleep states, and the like. The acquisition of continuous physiological data may facilitate automated recommendations concerning changes to sleep, recovery time, exercise routines, and the like.

Claims (39)

1. A method comprising:

measuring a resting heart rate for a user based on continuous heart rate data from a physiological monitor;

calculating a heart rate variability based on the continuous heart rate data;

converting a time series of heart rate data into a time series of heart rate reserve data based at least in part on the resting heart rate measured for the user with the physiological monitor;

automatically detecting exercise activity of the user;

generating an intensity score that provides a quantitative assessment of an intensity of the exercise activity using a weighted sum of heart rate reserve data from the time series of heart rate reserve data during the exercise activity;

automatically detecting a physical recovery state of the user;

calculating a sleep score indicative of a duration and efficiency of sleep by the user based on continuous data collected by the physiological monitor;

generating a recovery score that provides a quantitative assessment of the physical recovery state of the user indicating whether the user is recovered and ready for exercise based on a weighted combination of the heart rate variability, and the sleep score;

analyzing the quantitative assessment of the exercise activity and the quantitative assessment of the physical recovery state to automatically generate a recommendation on a change to an exercise routine of the user; and

displaying the recommendation to the user within a user interface of a visual display device.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein generating an intensity score includes analyzing the exercise activity on a remote server.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising determining a qualitative assessment of the exercise activity and communicating the qualitative assessment to the user.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein generating a recovery score includes analyzing the physical recovery state on a remote server.

5. The method of claim 4 further comprising determining a qualitative assessment of the physical recovery state and communicating the qualitative assessment to the user.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising generating periodic updates to the user concerning the physical recovery state.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the recommendation is generated on a remote server.

8. The method of claim 7 further comprising communicating the recommendation to the user in an electronic mail.

9. The method of claim 7 further comprising presenting the recommendation to the user in a web page.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprising generating the recommendation based upon a number of cycles of exercise and rest.

11. The method of claim 1 further comprising automatically detecting a sleep state of the user and generating a quantitative assessment of sleep quality for the user.

12. The method of claim 11 further comprising determining a readiness for exercise based on the quantitative assessment of the exercise activity, the sleep quality, and the physical recovery state.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the resting heart rate includes a moving average of day-to-day resting heart rates.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein measuring the resting heart rate includes performing a smoothing operation to distinguish changes from normal fluctuations in the resting heart rate measured for the user with the physiological monitor.

15. The method of claim 1 further comprising displaying statistics on the resting heart rate measured for the user with the physiological monitor.

16. The method of claim 1 further comprising presenting a cautionary indicator to warn the user of potential overtraining when the resting heart rate measured for the user is elevated for a number of days.

17. A computer program product comprising non-transitory computer executable code embodied in a non-transitory computer-readable medium that, when executing on one or more computing devices, performs the steps of:

measuring a resting heart rate for a user based on continuous heart rate data from a physiological monitor;

calculating a heart rate variability based on the continuous heart rate data;

converting a time series of heart rate data into a time series of heart rate reserve data;

automatically detecting exercise activity of the user;

generating an intensity score that provides a quantitative assessment of an intensity of the exercise activity using a weighted sum of heart rate reserve data from the time series of heart rate reserve data during the exercise activity;

automatically detecting a physical recovery state of the user;

generating a recovery score that provides a quantitative assessment of the physical recovery state of the user based on the heart rate variability and the resting heart rate measured for the user with the physiological monitor;

analyzing the quantitative assessment of the exercise activity and the quantitative assessment of the physical recovery state to automatically generate a recommendation on a change to an exercise routine of the user; and

displaying the recommendation to the user within a user interface of a visual display device.

18. The computer program product of claim 17 wherein generating an intensity score includes analyzing the exercise activity on a remote server.

19. The computer program product of claim 18 further comprising code that performs the step of determining a qualitative assessment of the exercise activity and communicating the qualitative assessment to the user.

20. The computer program product of claim 17 wherein generating a recovery score includes analyzing the physical recovery state on a remote server.
