Abstract

A surgical instrument includes an end effector assembly having jaw members movable between spaced-apart, first approximated, and second approximated positions. A knife is selectively movable relative to the end effector assembly between a retracted position, a first extended position, and a second extended position. A trigger is selectively actuatable between a un-actuated position, a first actuated position, and a second actuated position for moving the knife between its respective positions. A control member prevents movement of the trigger when the jaw members are disposed in the spaced-apart position, permits movement of the trigger to the first actuated position but prevents movement beyond the first actuated position when the jaw members are disposed in the first approximated position, and permits movement of the trigger to the second actuated position but prevents movement beyond the second actuated position when the jaw members are disposed in the second approximated position.

Claims (22)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

an end effector assembly having first and second jaw members, at least one of the jaw members movable relative to the other between a spaced-apart position and a plurality of approximated positions, wherein a different gap distance is defined between the jaw members in each of the approximated positions;

a knife selectively movable between a retracted position and a plurality of extended positions, wherein the knife extends a different distance between the jaw members in each of the extended positions, each of the extended positions of the knife corresponding to one of the approximated positions of the jaw members; and

at least one control member operably coupled with the end effector assembly and the knife, the at least one control member configured to limit a range of motion of the knife between the retracted position and the extended position corresponding to the position of the at least one jaw member.

2. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , further including a handle assembly having a movable handle operably coupled to the end effector assembly, the movable handle movable between a first position and a plurality of second positions for moving the at least one jaw member between the spaced-apart position and the plurality of approximated positions.

3. The surgical instrument according to claim 2 , further including a trigger assembly including a movable trigger operably coupled to the knife, the movable trigger movable between an un-actuated position and a plurality of actuated positions for moving the knife between the retracted position and the plurality of extended positions, each of the actuated positions corresponding to one of the plurality of second positions of the movable handle.

4. The surgical instrument according to claim 3 , wherein the at least one control member is coupled between the handle assembly and the trigger assembly, the at least one control member configured to limit a range of motion of the trigger between the un-actuated position and the actuated position that corresponds to the position of the movable handle.

5. The surgical instrument according to claim 4 , wherein the at least one control member impedes the range of motion of the trigger.

6. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the distance the knife extends between the jaw members is inversely related to the gap distance between the jaw members.

7. A surgical instrument, comprising:

an end effector assembly having first and second jaw members, at least one of the jaw members movable relative to the other between a spaced-apart position and a plurality of approximated positions, wherein a different gap distance is defined between the jaw members in each of the approximated positions;

a knife selectively movable between a retracted position and a plurality of extended positions, wherein the knife extends a different distance between the jaw members in each of the extended positions, each of the extended positions of the knife corresponding to one of the approximated positions of the jaw members; and

at least one control member operably coupled with the end effector assembly and the knife, the at least one control member configured to provide increased resistance to movement of the knife beyond the extended position corresponding to the position of the at least one jaw member.

8. The surgical instrument according to claim 7 , further including a handle assembly having a movable handle operably coupled to the end effector assembly, the movable handle movable between a first position and a plurality of second positions for moving the at least one jaw member between the spaced-apart position and the plurality of approximated positions.

9. The surgical instrument according to claim 8 , further including a trigger assembly including a movable trigger operably coupled to the knife, the movable trigger movable between an un-actuated position and a plurality of actuated positions for moving the knife between the retracted position and the plurality of extended positions, each of the actuated positions corresponding to one of the plurality of second positions of the movable handle.

10. The surgical instrument according to claim 9 , wherein the at least one control member is coupled between the handle assembly and the trigger assembly, the at least one control member configured to provide increased resistance to movement of the trigger beyond the actuated position that corresponds to the position of the movable handle.

11. A method, comprising:

moving at least one of first and second jaw members relative to the other from a spaced-apart position to an approximated position to grasp tissue therebetween, wherein in the approximated position the jaw members define a gap distance therebetween;

extending a knife from a retracted position to an extended position to cut tissue grasped between the jaw members, wherein in the extended position, the knife extends between the jaw members a distance that is inversely related to the gap distance defined between the jaw members.

12. The method according to claim 11 , wherein moving the at least one of the first and second jaw members to the approximated position includes moving a movable handle that is operably coupled to the end effector assembly from a first position to a second position.

13. The method according to claim 12 , wherein extending the knife from the retracted position to the extended position includes moving a trigger that is operably coupled to the knife from an un-actuated position to an actuated position.

14. The method according to claim 13 , wherein a range of motion of the trigger from the retracted position to the extended position is inversely related to a range of motion of the movable handle from the first position to the second position.
