Abstract

A method of perforating a web includes: rotating a cylinder comprising a longitudinal cylinder axis and at least one shaped anvil disposed on the cylinder; operatively engaging a support with the cylinder, wherein the support is moveable with respect to the cylinder; positioning a blade disposed on the support so as to cooperate in contacting relationship with the anvil, wherein the blade is substantially parallel to the longitudinal cylinder axis, and wherein at least one of the blade and the anvil comprise a plurality of teeth, and wherein adjacent teeth are separated by a recessed portion; and feeding a web between the cylinder and the support while the blade cooperates in contacting relationship with shaped anvil to perforate the web.

Claims (11)

1. A method of perforating a web, the method comprising:

rotating a cylinder comprising a longitudinal cylinder axis and at least one smooth-edged anvil having a profile of a continuous, sinusoidal shape that comprises more than one wavelength, the anvil comprising a plurality of anvil segments, the anvil segments being spaced radially about an outer surface of the rotating cylinder, wherein the anvil is helically mounted on the rotating cylinder at an angle of greater than 0 degrees to 45 degrees to the longitudinal cylinder axis, wherein each of the anvil segments are removable independent of one another, and wherein each of the anvil segments are adjustable independent of one another on the outer surface of the rotating cylinder to raise or lower the anvil segments independently;

operatively engaging a support with the cylinder, wherein the support is moveable with respect to the cylinder;

positioning a blade disposed on the support so as to cooperate in contacting relationship with the anvil, wherein the blade is substantially parallel to the longitudinal cylinder axis, and wherein the blade comprises a plurality of blade segments and each blade segment comprises a plurality of teeth, each tooth having a flat top portion and a tooth length across the flat top portion, and wherein adjacent teeth are separated by a recessed portion;

feeding a web between the cylinder and the support while the blade cooperates in contacting relationship with shaped anvil to perforate the web.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the blade is disposed in a blade holder, and wherein the blade holder is disposed on the support.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the anvil is helically mounted on the rotating cylinder at an angle of about 4 degrees to about 8 degrees to the longitudinal cylinder axis.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising operatively engaging the anvil and the blade to form an interaction point therebetween, wherein the interaction point is from 0.0001 inches to 0.01 inches.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cylinder has a diameter of 5 inches to 20 inches and a length of 10 inches to 150 inches.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the web is at least one of bath tissue and towel tissue.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cylinder and the support are at an angle of 0 degrees to 45 degrees from a cross machine direction, wherein the cross machine direction is perpendicular to a longitudinal web axis.
