Abstract

Various samples are generated on a substrate. The samples each includes or consists of one or more analytes. In some instances, the samples are generated through the use of gels or through vapor deposition techniques. The samples are used in an instrument for screening large numbers of analytes by locating the samples between a working electrode and a counter electrode assembly. The instrument also includes one or more light sources for illuminating each of the samples. The instrument is configured to measure the photocurrent formed through a sample as a result of the illumination of the sample.

Claims (17)

1. An instrument, comprising:

samples located between a working electrode and a counter electrode assembly comprising a plurality of counter electrodes, the samples each including one or more analytes, each of the analytes including a semiconductor, a distance between the working electrode and the counter electrode assembly being less than 10 mm, and

one or more light sources that each act as a source of one or more light beams that are each incident on one or more of the samples.

2. The instrument of claim 1 , wherein the distance between the working electrode and the counter electrode assembly is less than 5 mm.

3. The instrument of claim 1 , further comprising:

an electrolyte between the working electrode and the counter electrode assembly, the electrolyte including a redox couple.

4. The instrument of claim 3 , wherein the redox couple undergoes a reversible electrochemical oxidation with an exchange current density of at least 1 mA cm −2 for at least one of the counter electrodes of the plurality of counter electrodes.

5. The instrument of claim 3 , wherein the electrolyte is in direct physical contact with the samples and the working electrode.

6. The instrument of claim 5 , wherein the electrolyte and the samples exclude catalysts.

7. The instrument of claim 1 , wherein the working electrode is optically transparent and the one or more light beams pass through the working electrode before being incident on the samples.

8. The instrument of claim 1 , wherein the counter electrode assembly includes a single counter electrode.

9. The instrument of claim 1 , further comprising electronics that generate a value for a rate parameter that indicates a level of an electrical current through one of the counter electrodes.

10. The instrument of claim 9 , wherein the electronics correct the rate parameter for effects of dark current.

11. The instrument of claim 10 , further comprising electronics that generate a value for a conversion parameter that indicates a level of photocurrent through one of the samples upon which one of the light beams is incident.

12. The instrument of claim 10 , wherein the electronics correct the conversion parameter for effects of a parasitic reaction that occurs in the electrolyte.

13. The instrument of claim 1 , wherein the samples are attached to the working electrode such that the samples are immobilized relative to the working electrode.

14. The instrument of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the samples each includes one or more metal elements and oxygen.
