Abstract

The present invention relates to a diet product comprising an alginate in an aqueous dissolved or swelled form at a pH value causing the alginate not to gel until after it is consumed and comes into contact gastric acid.

Claims (7)

1. A method for regulating consumption of foods in a subject in need thereof comprising the step of the subject consuming an effective amount of a diet beverage or drink product at least 10 minutes prior to a main meal, wherein the diet beverage or drink product comprises an alginate in an aqueous dissolved or swelled form that is present at a concentration of 0.2 to 20g per kg in the beverage or drink product, wherein the beverage or drink product has a pH of 5 or more so as to not cause the alginate to gel prior to consumption, wherein the viscosity of the alginate increases when the pH decreases upon contact of the product with gastric acid in the stomach of the subject.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subject consumes the beverage or drink product in such amounts that the subject's faeces has density of 1 g/cm3 or below.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the faeces has a density of 0.9 g/cm3 or below.

4. A method for regulating the blood sugar in a subject in need thereof comprising administering to the subject a pharmaceutically effective amount of a diet beverage or drink product comprising an alginate in an aqueous dissolved or swelled form that is present at a concentration of 0.2 to 20g per kg in the beverage or drink product, wherein the beverage or drink product has a pH of 5 or more so as to not cause the alginate to gel prior to consumption, wherein the viscosity of the alginate increases when the pH decreases upon contact of the product with gastric acid in the stomach of the subject.

5. A method for lowering the level of cholesterol in a subject in need thereof, comprising administering to the subject a pharmaceutically effective amount of a diet beverage or drink product comprising an alginate in an aqueous dissolved or swelled form that is present at a concentration of 0.2 to 20g per kg of the beverage or drink product, wherein the beverage or drink product has a pH of 5 or more so as to not cause the alginate to gel prior to consumption and wherein the viscosity of the alginate increases when the pH decreases upon contact of the product with gastric acid in the stomach of the subject.

6. The method of claim 4 which further comprises the subject consuming the diet beverage or drink product at least 10 minutes prior to a main meal.

7. The method of claim 5 which further comprises the subject consuming the diet beverage or drink product at least 10 minutes prior to a main meal.
