Abstract

Provided is a protective insert to be received into a pocket of a protective athletic headwear. The protective insert includes an outer layer, at least one pliable middle layer, and a pliable inner layer. The outer layer includes an arrangement of first openings that extend at least partially through the outer layer. The at least one pliable middle layer has at least one arrangement of openings that extend at least partially through the at least one pliable middle layer. The outer layer, the at least one pliable middle layer and the pliable inner layer are sealed such that the openings form sealed air pockets in the at least one first pliable middle layer between the outer layer and the pliable inner layer.

Claims (30)

1. A protective insert to be received into a pocket of a protective athletic headwear, the protective insert comprising:

an outer layer comprising an arrangement of first openings extending at least partially through the outer layer;

at least one middle layer having at least one arrangement of openings extending at least partially through the at least one middle layer;

an inner layer; and

wherein the outer layer, the at least one middle layer, and the inner layer are sealed such that the openings form sealed air pockets in the at least one middle layer between the outer layer and the inner layer, wherein the protective insert has a triangular shape truncated below a vertex to provide a plane approximately parallel to a base of the triangular shape.

2. The protective insert of claim 1 , wherein the outer layer is made of one or more of a thermoplastic, an elastomer, and a rubber.

3. The protective insert of claim 1 , wherein the at least one middle layer and the inner layer are made of one or more of a rubber and an elastomer.

4. The protective insert of claim 1 , wherein the arrangement of first openings of the outer layer enable flexing of the outer layer to decelerate an impact on the protective insert.

5. The protective insert of claim 4 , wherein the first openings comprise elongate openings.

6. The protective insert of claim 5 , wherein the elongate openings are slits.

7. The protective insert of claim 6 , wherein a slit has a width from about ⅛ of an inch to about ⅜ of an inch.

8. The protective insert of claim 6 , wherein a slit has a height from about ½ of an inch to about 1½ inch.

9. The protective insert of claim 4 , wherein the arrangement of first openings comprises at least a first elongate opening spaced apart from a second elongate opening.

10. The protective insert of claim 9 , wherein the first elongate opening is spaced apart from the second elongate opening at a distance between about ⅛ of an inch to about ½ of an inch.

11. The protective insert of claim 4 , wherein the first openings are disposed at least at a distance from at least one edge of the outer layer.

12. The protective insert of claim 11 , wherein the distance is between about ⅛ of an inch to about ½ of an inch.

13. The protective insert of claim 4 , wherein the first openings cover a substantial portion of the protective insert.

14. The protective insert of claim 1 , further comprising an engagement device extending from the outer layer to couple the protective insert via a linking element to a facemask.

15. The protective insert of claim 14 , wherein the engagement device is a hook and the linking element is a flexible band to engage a frame member or a strap member of the facemask and to secure to the hook.

16. The protective insert of claim 1 , wherein the at least one arrangement of openings of the at least one middle layer comprises:

a first layer having a second arrangement of second openings; and

a second layer having a third arrangement of third openings, wherein the third arrangement alternates with the second arrangement.

17. The protective insert of claim 16 , wherein the second openings and the third openings are approximately non-overlapping and cover a substantial portion of the at least one protective insert.

18. The protective insert of claim 1 , wherein the protective insert is curvilinear in one or more of a vertical dimension and a horizontal dimension.

19. A protective insert to be received into a pocket of a protective athletic headwear, the protective insert comprising:

an outer layer comprising an arrangement of first openings extending at least partially through the outer layer;

at least one middle layer having at least one arrangement of openings extending at least partially through the at least one middle layer;

an inner layer, wherein the outer layer, the at least one middle layer, and the inner layer are sealed such that the openings form sealed air pockets in the at least one middle layer between the outer layer and the inner layer; and

an engagement device extending from the outer layer to couple the protective insert to a facemask.

20. The protective insert of claim 19 , wherein the engagement device is a hook.
