Abstract

A pigment composition may include an inorganic particulate material, a multivalent metal salt, and a non ionic dispersant. A substrate may be coated with an aqueous coating composition including the pigment composition. The substrate may be a paper product.

Claims (30)

. A pigment composition comprising an inorganic particulate material, a multivalent metal salt and a non ionic dispersant.

. A pigment composition according to claim 1 , wherein the inorganic particulate material is selected from one or more of: an alkaline earth metal carbonate or sulphate, a hydrous kandite clay, an anhydrous kandite clay, talc or mica.

. A pigment composition according to claim 1 , wherein the inorganic particulate material is selected from one or more of: calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, dolomite, gypsum, kaolin, ball clay, metakaolin, fully calcined kaolin.

- 8 . (canceled)

. A pigment composition according to any one of claim 1 , wherein the inorganic particulate material has a d 50 of about 0.1 μm to about 2 μm.

- 11 . (canceled)

. A pigment composition according to any one of claim 1 , wherein the inorganic particulate material has a particle size distribution steepness factor of about 25 to about 70.

- 14 . (canceled)

. A pigment composition according to any one of claim 1 , wherein the multivalent metal salt is a divalent metal salt.

. A pigment composition according to claim 15 , wherein the divalent metal salt is an alkaline metal salt.

. A pigment composition according to claim 16 , wherein the alkaline metal salt is a calcium or magnesium or barium salt.

. A pigment composition according to any one of claim 1 , wherein the anion of the metal salt is selected from chloride, sulphate, nitrate or hydroxide.

- 24 . (canceled)

. A pigment composition according to claim 1 , wherein the non ionic dispersant is a polymer and comprises alkylene oxide monomers.

. A pigment composition according to claim 1 , wherein the non ionic dispersant is a polymer and comprises an uncharged hydrophobic chain.

. A pigment composition according to any one of claim 1 , wherein the non ionic dispersant comprises amine and/or phosphate group or groups.

. A pigment composition according to claim 1 , wherein the non ionic dispersant is a polymer and the polymer comprises amine and/or phosphate group or groups.

. A pigment composition according to any one of claim 1 , further comprising an ionic dispersant.

. (canceled)

. A pigment composition comprising an inorganic particulate material and calcium chloride, wherein the inorganic particulate material is selected from one or more of: magnesium carbonate, dolomite, gypsum, a hydrous kandite clay an anhydrous kandite clay, talc or mica.

- 37 . (canceled)

. A pigment composition according to any one of claim 31 , wherein the inorganic particulate material has a d 50 of about 0.1 μm to about 2 μm.

- 42 . (canceled)

. A pigment composition according to claim 1 , wherein the inorganic particulate material is selected from one or more of: magnesium carbonate, dolomite, gypsum, a hydrous kandite clay, an anhydrous kandite clay, talc or mica, and wherein the non ionic dispersant is a polymer and comprises alkylene oxide monomers.

. A pigment composition according to claim 1 , wherein the inorganic particulate material is selected from one or more of: magnesium carbonate, dolomite, gypsum, a hydrous kandite clay, an anhydrous kandite clay, talc or mica, and wherein the non ionic dispersant is a polymer and comprises an uncharged hydrophobic chain.

. A pigment composition according to any one of claim 1 , wherein the inorganic particulate material is selected from one or more of: magnesium carbonate, dolomite, gypsum, a hydrous kandite clay, an anhydrous kandite clay, talc or mica, and wherein the non ionic dispersant comprises amine and/or phosphate group or groups.

. A pigment composition according to claim 1 , wherein the inorganic particulate material is selected from one or more of: magnesium carbonate, dolomite, gypsum, a hydrous kandite clay, an anhydrous kandite clay, talc or mica, and wherein the non ionic dispersant is a polymer and the polymer comprises amine and/or phosphate group or groups.

- 62 . (canceled)

. A coated paper product comprising a substrate coated with an aqueous coating composition comprising the pigment coating composition according to claim 1 , water, and at least one binder, wherein the paper product further comprises a precoat.
