Abstract

A pressure support device implements compensation for variations in air density of its operating environment. A pressurized flow of breathable gas is generated for delivery to the airway of a subject. One or more parameters associated with the ambient environment of the pressure support device are determined. These parameters can include one or more of an ambient barometric air pressure, an ambient air temperature, or ambient air humidity. In some embodiments, one or more assumed parameters associated with the ambient environment of the pressure support device are determined based on typical sleeping conditions of the subject. An ambient air density of the ambient environment of the pressure support device is estimated based on one or more of the parameters and/or assumed parameters. A flow rate of the pressurized flow of breathable gas is adjusted based on the estimated ambient air density of the ambient environment of the pressure support device.

1. A system configured for compensating for variations in air density of an ambient environment of a pressure support device, the system comprising:

a flow generator configured to generate a pressurized flow of breathable gas for delivery to the airway of a subject;

at least one sensor configured to provide one or more output signals conveying information relating to one or more parameters associated with the ambient environment of the pressure support device; and

one or more processors configured to execute computer program modules, the computer program modules comprising:

an ambient parameter determination module configured to determine individual ones of the one or more parameters associated with the ambient environment of the pressure support device based on individual ones of the one or more output signals provided by the at least one sensor;

an ambient parameter assumption module configured to determine one or more assumed parameters associated with the ambient environment of the pressure support device based on typical sleeping conditions of the subject,

an ambient air density estimation module configured to determine an estimated ambient air density of the ambient environment of the pressure support device based on individual ones of the one or more parameters determined by the ambient parameter determination module and the one or more assumed parameters determined by the ambient parameter assumption module; and

a flow generator control module configured to control the flow generator to adjust a flow rate of the pressurized flow of breathable gas based on the estimated ambient air density of the ambient environment of the pressure support device such that the flow rate of the pressurized flow delivered to the airway of the subject is controlled to compensate for variations in ambient air density.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more parameters associated with the ambient environment of the pressure support device include one or more of an ambient barometric air pressure, an ambient air temperature, or ambient air humidity.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more assumed parameters associated with the ambient environment of the pressure support device include one or both of an assumed air temperature or an assumed air humidity.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a user interface, wherein the one or more assumed parameters are entered via the user interface.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein responsive to not receiving a determined parameter from the ambient parameter determination module, the ambient air density estimation module is configured to determine an estimated ambient air density of the ambient environment of the pressure support device based on a corresponding assumed parameter determined by the ambient parameter assumption module.

6. A method for compensating for variations in air density of an ambient environment of a pressure support device, the method comprising:

generating a pressurized flow of breathable gas for delivery to the airway of a subject;

determining one or more parameters associated with the ambient environment of the pressure support device;

determining one or more assumed parameters associated with the ambient environment of the pressure support device based on typical sleeping conditions of the subject;

determining an estimated ambient air density of the ambient environment of the pressure support device based on individual ones of the one or more parameters and assumed parameters associated with the ambient environment of the pressure support device; and

adjusting a flow rate of the pressurized flow of breathable gas based on the estimated ambient air density of the ambient environment of the pressure support device such that the flow rate of the pressurized flow delivered to the airway of the subject is controlled to compensate for variations in ambient air density.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the one or more parameters associated with the ambient environment of the pressure support device include one or more of an ambient barometric air pressure, an ambient air temperature, or ambient air humidity.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the one or more assumed parameters associated with the ambient environment of the pressure support device include one or both of an assumed air temperature or an assumed air humidity.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the one or more assumed parameters are entered via a user interface.

10. The method of claim 6 , wherein responsive to not determining a determined parameter, the air density of the ambient environment of the pressure support device is estimated based on a corresponding assumed parameter.

11. A system configured for compensating for variations in air density of an ambient environment of a pressure support device, the system comprising:

flow generating means for generating a pressurized flow of breathable gas for delivery to the airway of a subject;

ambient parameter determining means for determining one or more parameters associated with the ambient environment of the pressure support device;

assumed parameter determining means for determining one or more assumed parameters associated with the ambient environment of the pressure support device based on typical sleeping conditions of the subject;

air density estimating means for determining an estimated ambient air density of the ambient environment of the pressure support device based on individual ones of the one or more parameters determined by the ambient parameter determining means and the assumed parameters determined by the assumed parameter determining means associated with the ambient environment of the pressure support device; and

flow rate adjusting means for controlling the flow generating means to adjust a flow rate of the pressurized flow of breathable gas based on the estimated ambient air density of the ambient environment of the pressure support device such that the flow rate of the pressurized flow delivered to the airway of the subject is controlled to compensate for variations in ambient air density.
