Related apparatus and methods are also disclosed.
1. A system for monitoring connection status of a cable in a network comprising:
a detector operationally connected to the cable to generate one or more loss of service (LoS) alerts about connection of the cable to a network node;
a metal line test module; and
a processor to
receive from the detector the one or more LoS alerts,
cause, upon a LoS alert threshold being reached after receiving the one or more LoS alerts, a test of the cable by the metal line test module to confirm a connection status of the cable,
receive external information possibly affecting the connection status of the cable,
identify whether any of the external information is likely to have an impact on the connection status of the cable, and
check a result of the test of the cable by the metal line test module against the identified external data.
2. A system according to claim 1 wherein the network node is comprised in a digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM) or a multi-service access node (MSAN), and wherein the one or more LoS alerts comprises a loss of synchronization alarm.
3. A system according to claim 1 wherein the network node is comprised in a broadband remote access server (BRAS), and wherein the one or more LoS alerts comprises dropped point-to-point protocol (PPP) session data.
4. A system according to claim 1 wherein the one or more LoS alerts includes an identity of the cable, and wherein the LoS alert threshold comprises a predetermined number of LoS alerts within a predetermined time.

A system according to claim 1 , wherein the system is for use in a network comprising a plurality of cables, wherein the processor is to receive network information comprising at least one of circuit routing data or network infrastructure data, and to use the network information to identify or locate one or more of the plurality of cables about which the one or more LoS alerts are being received by the processor.
6. A system according to claim 1 wherein the processor is further to:
generate a first LoS alert upon determination that the LoS alert threshold has been reached;
trigger operation of the metal line test module upon generation of the first LoS alert; and
generate a second, confirmatory, LoS alert upon confirmation of a faulty connection status of the cable.
7. A system according to claim 1 further comprising a report generator to generate and send a connection status alert as a result of the test of the cable by the metal line test module.
8. A system according to claim 1 further comprising a mapping application to locate an event causing a faulty connection status of the cable.
9. A method of monitoring connection status of a cable operatively connected to a detector, comprising:
receiving from the detector one or more loss of service (LoS) alerts about connection of the cable to a network node;
causing, upon a LoS alert threshold being reached after receiving the one or more LoS alerts, a metal line test of the cable to confirm the connection status of the cable to the network node;
receiving external information possibly affecting the connection status of the cable;
identifying whether any of the external information is likely to have an impact on the connection status of the cable; and
checking a result of the metal line test of the cable against the identified external data.
10. A method according to claim 9 wherein the one or more LoS alerts relates to a link between a customer premises and a digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM) or a multi-service access node (MSAN), and wherein the one or more LoS alerts comprises a loss of synchronization alarm.
11. A method according to claim 9 wherein the one or more LoS alerts relates to a link between a customer premises and a broadband remote access server (BRAS), and wherein the one or more LoS alerts comprises dropped point-to-point protocol (PPP) session data.
12. A method according to claim 9 , for use in a network comprising a plurality of cables each being operatively connected to a detector, comprising:
receiving, by a processor from the detector, one or more LoS alerts about a respective connection of one or more of the plurality of cables to a network node;
receiving, by the processor, network information comprising at least one of circuit routing data or network infrastructure data; and
using the network information to identify or locate one or more of the plurality of cables about which the one or more LoS alerts are being received by the processor.
13. A method according claim 9 further comprising generating and sending a connection status alert as a result of the metal line test of the cable.
